View Full Version : .DS Store

Half a beginner question:

I often swap files between my MAC and PC and have noticed that a .DS Store file is always created on the PC. I checked out the Apple support site and found this:

Mac OS X 10.4: How to prevent .DS_Store file creation over network connections (http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301711)

Is it safe to apply this setting to the MAC? Has anybody else done this to the MAC?

It should be pretty safe as apple have endorsed it.

I don't like the .DS_store as much as you do, they seem to get in the way on every other platform.. Seems that Apple stop the Thumbs.db from showing up, I don't see why microsoft could do the same.

By the way, goon ...

It is "Mac", short for "Macintosh". Not "MAC", which is an acronym for "Media Access Controller", the chip at the heart of every ethernet interface.

Yes, we're fussy about such things :)

I stand corrected.

I will apply this setting on my Mac later on today.

Yes it's safe. Programs such as Mac Pilot have a GUI for setting these things, but essentially all they do is run that command.

"defaults" simply edits the appropriate preferences (.plist) file.
