View Full Version : Strange behaviour on 'right click' --> 'Open With'

I've just noticed something on my C2D MacBook Pro, that has me puzzled.

When I right click and then go to open with, I am faced with the list of usual apps, but in triplicate, or quadruple.

I think I've a screwed prefs plist or something similar. Anybody know how to revert back to singular entries for the list?

The OSX version is 10.4.11.

There's a fix here (http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=6507112).

Interesting to know ... although I went in the opposite direction, and used Diablotin to remove 'Open With' (and several other contex-menu items) completely as it would slow Finder down badly.

It definitely to do with having identical backups of programs on a connected drive.

The fix above works once, but you'd need to do it after every time you connect an external backup drive.

I don't find that the duplicates slow things down.

EDIT: Discussed here some time ago:

yeah, I had issues with Spotlight indexing my Time Machine backup. Sometimes I'd experience problems, sometimes not.

Going into System Prefs and changing it so that Spotlight ignored my drive worked wonders.

Thanks for your help, guys! That worked a treat.

As for the identical backup drive, yes, that is true in my case. I keep an identical just in case the system drive goes bad, and every so often boot from it to check that the programmes that I have recently put on to the system have installed to the drive correctly.

I'm just built a little script that will mean that I don't have to find the command on here or the net, then copy it into the terminal from a web page.

If anyone wants it, then I'll be happy to send it to them!

Hi guys, sorry to double post, but I wanted to put a title in here.

I have built an automated script to clean this up, now, and I have put it up for download here (http://seanneedham.es/duplicate icon remover script.zip)

Unzip the contents into the OSX --> Applications --> Applescript Folder, with the folder name for the action of "Duplicate Icon Remover Script" (I know that some unzippers append the names!) it won't work other wise.

In there, there is the workflow, and a terminal file. Leave the terminal file where it is, and you can copy the workflow to somewhere else. Just launch it with the "Automator Launcher" and it does the job without having to have any further input!

Hopefully it will help you guys out a little.
