View Full Version : MacBook Air Backlit Keyboard problems

The loud fan may be annoying, but there's absolutely something wrong when the backlit keyboard on the MBA (as well as the display) lights up in ample light and dims in darkness - it's absolutely bass ackwards.

There's a thread over at Macrumors (http://forums.mactalk.com.au/showthread.php?p=450785#post450785) with a number of people experiencing this issue - some suggest resetting the PRAM (which works for some, but not others), while a band-aid solution seems to be the use of Lab Tick (http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/system_disk_utilities/labtick.html) to fix the keyboard's behaviour, but lose it's ability to adapt to lighting conditions.

Any other MBA owners find this kind of keyboard behaviour, and had any success in dealing with it?

Yes, my wife had the same problem. Lab tick is useless for it really - just overrides the settings. might as well turn it off.

What worked for me was a ?PMU? reset by turning off the computer, then holding down the power button on turning it on until you get the long tone.

THen I tested it out by blocking off the sensor with my finger. Seemed to work!

I hope a proper fix is coming soon. I cam envisage the problem recurring

Tried that, didn't work for me sadly.

It's a shame, this is an awesome machine but minor bugs like this and the fan noise really spoil it.

My keyboard backlighting works fine. You probably need to do some calibration on it to get it to work first off.

Nup. There's no calibration. It's just buggered, pure and simple.

Putting the thing into bright light turns the backlight on. And the PMU resetting etc doesn't seem to do anything.

Let's hope they do something about this.

I just got my mackbook air and I love it, still got some troubleshooting issues with it, but it seems to work fine with all the software and hardware. There is a great site for tech support I have just found and I see they have a page for macbook air - Problems with Apple MacBook Air (http://www.fixya.com/support/p647011-apple_macbook_air)

Hope it helps

Good luck

The keyboard backlighting on my Macbook Pro does exactly this as well.

Think some tech was having a bad day

I use the Lab Tick work around. As bugs go, its pretty minor, but I do miss it working correctly as my last one did.

Had the same problem on my Macbook Air. After cycling System Preferences and carrying out SMC reset (SHIFT+CONTROL+OPTION+POWER BUTTON), it did not work.

However, this worked!

FN + F6 (i.e. brightness settings....shucks its quite obvious!)

Cheers!
