So, you're saying professionally pressed CDs work fine (as expected) -
and CD-R (and I assume CD-RW) doesn't work, right?

Did they work previously, or has it always been like this?

I've had old CD-ROM drives that don't read CD-R well simply because they were built before CD-R existed. You could try some different CD-R brands just to make sure - in my experience the dye-colour of the CD-R can make a difference on older drives - also the quality of the disc varies by manufacturer.

Well if it has a good day it will read it, But nearly all the time it will not!

I know this is off topic but are you that crazy guy fully upgrading your ibook clamshell ;)? I would LOVE to see pictures of the inside LOL.

Some ideas:

- Try different brands & test compatability (trusty Kodak Ultimas might work)
- Try discs burnt at lower speed - even 1x (usually a higher quality burn)
- Clean CDs (wipe from centre to rim - not in circular motion)
- CD lens cleaner (go for a better brand - wet cleaning shouldn't be needed)
- Manual cleaning (very gently wipe lens with soft *clean* microfibre cloth)
- Cannibalise a drive from another machine (maybe time to move up to DVD?)

That's everything I can think of (off the top of my head anyway).
Good luck!

The old cd-rom drives in the calamshells and early imacs perform badly when it comes to reading burnt cds. My advice is to either live with it or replace it. You can get a cd-rw off ebay for not much money (around $60). Almost any make/model will do. Hack the drivers and away you go!

Sounds like the laser is gone , they dont last forever :(
best bet get a replacment drive, i had similar issue with my old powerbook g3 500 firewire, the dvd drive stoped reading all burnt media including dvd-r's, replaced it with a ibm dvd drive from ebay, had to file a bit of the end of it to make it fit , the pismo's dvd face plate was diffrent was going to use the face plate , bummer.
