View Full Version : How many Apps

hiredgoon
31st January 2008, 12:36 PM
Hi,

Stupid question but it's something I can't answer myself. Does having more apps slow down your mac? Im not talking about the basics like Adobe, iWork, etc. I mean the smaller apps like adium, last.fm, cocnut battery, mozodojo, skitch, etc... the smaller ones that I use less often but keep them for the odd occasion? Is this the same with widgets?

Also, is there a way people can list all their Apps on something like a spread sheet so others can compare and see what they could add? If so, please start posting them!

Respect.

printfinder (http://cedricmacdp.free.fr/printfinder/en/) is a great little app for getting a list of a folder, so, here's my list:

Only Ones I've Paid For.app

Running applications will suck up RAM. Having them in your Apps folder isn't going to affect the machine at all.

EDIT: Widgets on the other hand will because as soon as Dashboard is opened they are running, constantly, and you can't shut them down unless you manually close them all down.

OSX is good because it allocates RAM (a main speed factor) according to what you're actually doing inside open apps.
In the old days with OS9, you had to allocate max and optimum RAM to each app. and that got allocated if the app was open but not in use.
Still, if you have a lot of stuff open, even if you're not using it, you'll get some speed slowdown.
So even under OSX, I keep my old OS9 habit of shutting down apps I'm not using.
(Tip: get used to hitting Cmd+tab every now and then to see what's open -- easier than consulting the dock.)
This isn't much of a hassle and, if you need an app for just a while, OSX will tend to open it fairly quickly unless it's a really big bugger like Photoshop.

Never been sure how much oomph widgets use: be good to get some info on this.
I try to keep my permanent widgets to a minimum but can't do without: iStat (of course!), calendar, various world clocks, dictionary (though you can always run this as an app in its own right) and the little thing that gets you to crucial utilities (can't remember its name but it looks like a little black wheel with white spokes).
None of these require a net connection so run "internally".
Anyone else noticed speed drops with increased widget use?

I personally don't notice a difference with the amount of applications STORED on my HDD, but when they are open, that's when I notice a difference.
At the moment I'm on my MacBook (Specs in Footer, 80gb hdd and 10.4.11 atm) I have 10 applications open (including Finder and Dashboard). This does not include the MenuBar Apps or the amount of widgets I have open.

The only time I'll notice the Mac Slow down, is when I open PhotoShop or MSW4M (MS Word for Mac).

As for finding all the apps.

Apple Menu | About this Mac | (More Info...) | Software [on the left] | Applications

Give it a minute or two and it should list all of the applications on the machine.
