I'm sure this is a stupid question and as soon as someone answers I'll realise I'd known it before and forgotten, but ... :)

How/where do you set what particular type of file is opened by what sw app? In particular, I want Word to open all rtf files, but with some files sent to me by one person, when I click on any of them they open in TextEdit. And that's the icon that's beside them too, not a Word one ...How do I change that? I have been opening them all in Word by going into Word and doing 'file - open' but it'd be much quicker if I could just double-click on the file name ...

This question gets asked so many times...

RCDefaultApp is what you need. It is simple and easy to do.

There are other ways (such as Get Info/Open With/Always Open With but I like RCDefaultApp).

Thank you - and I'm sorry! I knew it was one of those obvious ones, but I didn't know the answer... :)

I use the Get Info option - is part of Mac OS X.
Is easy - select the file you want...
hit Apple + I

and in the Get Info box there is the Open With section...

For some reason, I have found that that option doesn't always work. Even if you hit "Change All..."

Maybe it was just my experience that has turned me off that.

Yeah... it's one of those things that I often scratch my head over too...

Maybe it should be under System Prefs instead. Hey Apple - just things cos I said so :)

Thanks! MacTalk does it again. Bloody TextEdit kept popping up when I have Pages and NeoOffice loaded.

BTW NeoOffice opens my *.docs better than Pages in terms of maintaining all the formatting, and opens my Excel files too, runs all the macros etc. Looks like Office too, so I don't even have to think. Grouse!
