oh dear the ibook screen has been fussy about what angle it's at for a while but now for no obvious reason i push the power button and nothing happens.
it won't boot from the os x disc any ideas what went wrong? yes it is plugged in.

This sounds suspiciously like the logicboard flaw that afflicts a large number of g3 iBooks.

Apple have a warranty extension to cover this (recurring) flaw. Bringing total warranty to three years from the date of purchase.

This link (http://www.apple.com.au/support/ibook/faq/) has information on this program, check there to see if your ibook is covered, and if so, get in contact with apple to arrange for it to be repaired.
