View Full Version : dvd drive: TitaniumPB to 12"PB?

16th December 2007, 06:48 PM
the superdrive in our 12" 1.0GHz PowerBook G4 is broken and i thought i could swap it with the dvd drive from a titanium 550Mhz PowerBook
the tibook's dvd drive is the Matshita DVD-ROM SR-8187. does anyone know if it's compatible with the 12" PB?

great! thanks :)
i'm not game to do this one myself, so how much would it cost to get it done by an aasp?

If you're going to pay someone to do it (it would cost upwards of $150), I'd get a new Superdrive installed. The stock slot-loading drive in the Ti PB is very dated and fragile, one of the first models. It's not worth switching over as it's not a very good drive in the first place :)

If you are willing to go DIY, the iFixit guides are very good - it's not too big a job.

eBay would be your best bet for a replacement Superdrive - such as a Panasonic UJ-8x5 model or Pioneer K05 or K06 models. Both can be made region free too :D

what a waste of 2 hours. there's no chance that the tibook's dvd drive will fit in the 12" pb unless i chop it up

there'll be brackets screwed onto the drive, swap them.

Most drives comply to standards for mounting, they aren't special drives.

two tiny screws on each side and you should be home&hosed

are you sure? because i took the dvd drive out of the tibook. then stripped the 12" pb down to the heat sink and fan, then thought i should check that the drive will actually fit before i go any further - it sticks out by about an inch past the drive bracket.

The powerbook medic site (http://www.powerbookmedic.com/xcart1/product.php?productid=16358) indicates that the drive is the same, but with the extra bracket on the old ti-book.

ok so the drives are totally different. i really don't think it's possible, unless i'm supposed to strip the drives down and swap out the parts??

these are the 2 drives:

Looks like the stock PB Ti drive has a non-standard housing, not worth removing I'm afraid :(

well one good thing came out of this. after taking it apart and putting it back together, the ethernet is working again!
