View Full Version : Need help article - G4 upgrade won't work

I am attempting to get a Sonnet Encore 1Ghz G4 upgrade working in a B&W - and it wont.

I've upgraded the firmware and it gave me the "put in your G4 now" message. Everything is seated correctly with the new jumper blocks and when I hit the power switch I get power to the mother board & the fans on the G4 start up but that's it. No startup chime, the monitor doesnt come on, my mouse doesn't light up and the drives don't startup.

If I take the G4 out and put the G3 back everything works fine first go.

Has anyone heard of this particular fubar before & can you point me to a thread/article on what the fix is?

Thanks.

i hope you bought that new, coz it sounds like its a dud. Try a warranty claim...

Nope, through ebay - supposedly from a working machine. The guy offered a 14 day return though.

It seems that you have been fairly thorough with the setup and as a result I have to say it sounds pretty dead to me too. My experience of fried processors, although quite limited, was pretty much identical to the symptoms you describe (I slayed a G3 imac). No chime, no drives spinning up, nothing.

Without wanting to depress you too much, have you checked that the particular card you are using will work in you particular mac? (according to the card manufacturer, Sonnet, that is)

I have a bad feeling about this, sorry

Hi Kim,

It came in the original box and it does cover my model. The guy I got it from said that he had had it for a month - I'm about to send an email asking some pretty hard questions.

FYI it is supposed to work in the following.
G3 All-in-one
G3 B&W
G3 Desktop
G3 Minitower
Server G3
G4 (PCI Graphics)
Server G4 (PCI Graphics)

I think it is also supposed to speed up the kitchen sink.

Does anyone know how to test if a chip is dead. Can something be done with a voltage multimeter or something like that?

Hey Eurosnob, I went looking for information specifically pertaining to the Sonnet Encore and installation problems and came up with a couple of links that are relevant to your issue. The first one relates 100% to the problem you are having. (http://www.applefritter.com/node/2424) A solution is still possible it would seem. The others are worth a look also as they are basically discussions about troubleshooting this particular issue (upgrades/ no chime, HD won't spin up etc). However only you can gauge the worth of the following links.

Sonnet support page(s) for the Encore card I am sure you must have looked at too? (http://www.sonnettech.com/support/encorezif/default.html)

Chip has been returned for refund.

Now I wait and see if the seller makes good with the refund. Fun!

Thanks to all who tried to help.
