View Full Version : Mac User Groups

Hi,

It's no secret that many Mac User Groups (MUGs) exist around the country. This is a place where you can let other users know about meetings. Just post when and where the group will meet, and any other details you think are necessary.

Given enough notice, "news monkeys" can post the details of these meetings on our front page.

I don't know of any, but I'll be the first to say if there's a Brisbane group I'll happily turn up for some geek loving. :)

AUSOM (http://www.ausom.com.au/) (Apple Users Society Of Melbourne) was once quite a prolific Apple group in Melbourne, but numbers have since dwindled. It's now full of old codgers still trying to make sense of Clarisworks 2.0 on their Classic II.

Ahhh ... the old days of the Youth and Adventure SIG ... LC475's leeching NEARLY 100MB of data in one sitting ... then time for a round of localtalk Marathon :)

I'm not a member anymore - in fact I don't thing I ever was - but they're having a swap meet in the June meet, which brings about many interesting items - especially old rare 68K hardware and later PPC stuff.

Hi

I'm President of the Australian Mac Users Group (AUSMUG). I set this group up as a resource to support all the Australian MUG's. I would love nothing more than to be able to help AppleTalk become a recognised MUG. There are many benefits. I'll agree many MUG's do have older members but that is mainly because since the internet took off many younger potential members get support online instead. AppleTalk is a perfect example.

Even though Apple has links to our site on theirs and we are co ordinating special deals for all MUG's , co ordinating Tsunami support within the local MUG's, updating contact info , publishing events, reviews etc we are still not recognized officially till our membership reaches 100 which is the pre requisite to be recognized as an online MUG (although our membership is still small, committee representatives from around 95% of Australia's MUG's have joined and we are in regular contact). There are a number of groups like mine and AppleTalk that I'd like to see officially recognized. For the MUG scene to survive young blood is essential.

Even though AppleTalk isn't an officially recognised group I do promote it on our site and can let you know other MUG's like the Western Australian Mac User Group (WAMUG) often quote items they've seen on AppleTalk. If there was any way we could work together be it sharing resources/meetings or cross promoting I'd be happy because as an online group I understand the logistic problems organising physical get togethers. I'd like to organize this kind of sharing of resources amongst all the Australian Groups. :D

There are 2 User Groups in Brisbane. Here are their links. The first Apple Q is the strongest.

I remember AUSOM - I was a member back in 1989-1991! My trusty ][e and I shared many a great time back then with software I bought from the member meetings...

I had no idea it was still going.

Nowadays I'm actually a member of Melbourne PC User Group, but I've not even opened the wrapping on a magazine in 6 months - it's not the PC thing in particular, rather that everything I can get in the magazine, I've been able to find on the net.

AMAQ still exists they have become a chartered Lions Club and are heavilly involved with fixing up old Macs to send to schools in Bali and other South East Asian countries along with assisting with the Tsunami. By the way if anyone has any spared ADB Mice they are always on the lookout for some.

AppleQ would probably be better suited if you want more Mac orientated support options from a MUG. They have training sessions and member library of books, cd's etc plus regular meetings.

Click here for Australian Mug Info (http://australian.macusersgroup.org/index.php?option=com_wrapper&Itemid=55) state by state. Clicking on Australia brings up online groups. Standard groups are listed by state. I'd like to hear of any new prospective groups if anyone has any info. The Find Out What Australian MUG's Have To Offer link lists what services the various MUG's offer.

AUSMUG
7th May 2005, 10:24 PM
Nobody has posted any events here yet for MUG's so I was wondering if the Moderators would have a problem with me taking on the roll of providing this info. If there is no problem I could post a monthly timetable listing what's going on at the various Australian MUG's. I think it was a generous offer to promote other Australian MUG's made by the AppleTalk Admins and I'd hate to squander the opportunity.

By the way now that AppleTalk is starting to have more & more meetings themselves in various cities I would like to promote these likewise on my site. As such I would appreciate it if any photos, stories etc relating to these meetings could be emailed to me so I can add them to my site or else get permission to copy details of your meetings from here to my site.

Perhaps one day members from my group would be welcome at your meetings Australia wide and visa versa your members would be welcome at ours (we are an Australian wide online group too) and as I've said before if AppleTalk ever considers becoming a recognised Mac User Group I'd be pleased to offer whatever assistance I could. AppleTalk is easily the best Australian based Macintosh Forum already but consider this, if AppleTalk did become recognised they would automatically become the largest Mac User Group in Australia. That gives you pretty good bragging rights. Plus as I mentioned earlier if you co hosted meetings with other online groups like mine then higher quality presenters could be organized due to the appeal to vendors to speak to many users in one place. Presenters don't like having to speak to numerous groups, some with small numbers in the same city. They would much prefer to speak to a larger audience.

I'd appreciate any feedback on any of these matters. What I'll do to not muck up the current thread is start a new one with a poll to get some feedback from AppleTalk members on the pros & cons of becoming a recognised Mac User Group (http://forums.appletalk.com.au/index.php?showtopic=7594&st=0) .

Considering it's now the 5th of June, I wont wait any longer for MUG's to post this months meetings news to me. I'll post those I've received and as I get more info I'll edit this post.

This isn't intended as an open invitation to flame, just an honest question :)

I'd like to add my request to hear this info too.

I honestly don't mean to be rude, but I'm just not seeing the point. I once looked into joining AUSOM but the membership fee was really high and for that you got... a newsletter.

Are there any groups that get together not for lectures and information seminars but just 'cause we're Mac users and want to meet'n'greet, talk Mac, and shoot the shit like we do on AppleTalk? Something a bit more social and a bit less educational.

AUSOM is a great user group filled with lovely helpful people - but I'd suggest most of the SIGS are targeted towards new users and (in the nicest possible way) older people. There are some very technical SIGS - programming for example - for which my best friend cut his teeth on and now works for well, Microsoft :) A good job if you can get it.

There are 2 User Groups in Brisbane. Here are their links. The first Apple Q is the strongest.

I'm amazed that Apple-Q is still going in Brisbane. Back when I was 12 with a IIe I would never miss a meeting. I think my Dad helped on the committee for a while too :)

I must go along for a trip down memory lane and see if it still has anything to offer for me :)

Do you need to be a member to attend presentations, as i wouldn't mind attending the 3GM VOIP presentation.

Apart from running the Australian Mac Users Group which supports all Australian MUGs, I also run the Sydney Mac Users Group (SMUG) which is based around the Parramatta/Hills District in Sydney.

We will be having our first physical meeting tomorrow night (01/02/06) between 6PM-8.30PM at

MACni Apple Computers

Shop 2, 239 Church St

(cnr of Church & George St opposite the Commonwealth Bank)

Parramatta

The main presentation is all about MacWorld SF 2006, the new Intel Macs & iLife 06

I'd just like to extend an invitation to any of AppleTalks members living near Parramatta to come along if they'd like to.

Cost is free. There will be munchies & drinks plus small give-aways. The meeting is also going to be videotaped so as to produce our own Vodcast. :D

Tasmania, Hobart

There is a meeting of TasMac (the Hobart Apple User Group) at 7:30pm on Thursday the 2nd of March 2006 at Friends School.

I don't really have any experience with this group, but will be going along and thought it might be a good place for AppleTalk members in Hobart to meet as well. For more info, see this post (http://forums.appletalk.com.au/index.php?showtopic=16793).
