View Full Version : Hooking up iBook to 17" Samtron monitor?

2nd March 2005, 11:00 AM
Just trying to rearrange my hardware bits to make a 'docking station' for my iBook. I've got my PC's old 17" Samtron monitor. Would it be possible to hook up the iBook to when at my desk? (It's the 500 Mhz 'dual USB' model). If so, how would I go about it? Specially as I'm not the most techy of people!

You'd need a cable from its video out, assuming it supported stuff back then. On the current series machines you use a cable that coverts video out -> d-sub vga plug.

You can only mirror your built in display on that model iBook. The screen-spanning hack will not work. The connector you will need is a proprietary one from Apple - costs about $35 from memory. I think it's called a Mini VGA to VGA adapter.

I had a iBook 500: the video adapter cable was included in the iBook box.

the $35 cable is that which converts the iBook video output to an S-video output (to play on a TV) - that you have to purchase separately.

I got the iBook second hand recently, and it didn't have the cable with it. I guess this is what I'm looking for:

Hmm, anyone have a spare one of these lying around? :)

Keep in mind that the maximum resolution you will get is the maximum on the iBook's screen.

The hack will not work because the video card in your iBook is below the specifications required to "span" a desktop across two displays. unfortunately.
