View Full Version : Suddenly no finder on OSX 10.3.9!

I turned on my kids' G3 imac 350 yesterday to find ... no finder! The speaker, monitor and date icons were in the top right corner, but other than that the whole desktop was blank (no top menu bar either) and the beachball was running. The dock was still working fine. The only way I can get to finder is by clicking the set time and date button and going through the system preferences pane. After I close that finder is back.....

Does anyone have any idea what has caused this, and how to fix it?

Hi DebB,

try making another user account, and see if that rectifies your problem.

Once you're in Finder, go to Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility.app
Once Disk Utility is open, click on the icon of your hard drive and click "repair permissions".
This may just fix your problem ... it's often fixed random problems for me.

this was a problem in 10.3 there are ways around it and one would be DragThing(which allows you access even without a finder), another would be to get into Tiger.
I found that logging out and back in again usually cleared up the problem.
Yes permissions should be repaired if you think it is a system problem.

You could try going into your Home folder -> Library -> Preferences and removing all the com.apple.whatever preferences then restarting. That will more than likely fix it.

Thanks again, repairing the permissions did the trick.
