Looking at buying a new 14" iBook and I realise that the resolution on the unit is not as good as a Powerbook. Wondering if anyone knows what resolution they are capable of when connected to a Sony CRT

without the screen spanning hack - it will be 1024x768.
I'm not sure what it would be with it, but my powerbook has a similar video card and can do 1600x1200 externally.

The iBook only allows screen "mirroring" officially. This would limit you to 1024x768.

There is a hack that allows you to enable dual screen spanning (external + internal LCD) functionality: http://www.rutemoeller.com/mp/ibook/ibook_e.html

With the hack you can drive the external resolution fairly high, but since the iBook doesn't support DVI, I don't know how great the image will be...

Some monitors don't signal the software in the mac correctly as to their highest resolution. If you can't select a high res. and you know the monitor is capable of better, unplug the monitor but leave Apple's VGA adapter plugged in and select the resolution you want...
