I was disappointed to find Alex is the only voice updated in Leopard, and it's no way as good as the time Jobs demonstrated his voice at one of the expos for Leopard.

Is there a Natural Female Voice coming soon, maybe in 10.5.1 or is there any available elsewhere ?

I suppose new features will be added as Leopard evolves, as they have been added in all former OSes.

There's a very nice Allison here (http://www.cepstral.com/demos/) that you can sample. Think the OS X version of Allison is a 100MB download though... and may cost something - not sure.

Here's (http://www.cepstral.com/downloads/) a list.

On the subject of natural female voices, have a listen to Nuance's Australian voice "Karen":

Karen in her educated ABC News Reader Voice...

Hey - you know what we really do / don't need?

An Australian Female Voice that sounds like either Kath or Kim.

"Hulloooo! This is Kimmm! Hullooo! Foxy moron here!"

The other Nuance voice for Australia is Lee, we use Karen and Lee at work for some of our publications. I personally think they'll be reading the ABC news one day. Announcers days are numbered!!

thanks
better natural articulation, but Allison still sounds like a echoing computer not a normal voice.

so does Alex though - if you get "it" to read something extra lengthy with a lot of punctuation

Why is it that all of these synthetic voices all sound like they have a stutter? The way the voice pitch breaks in mid, phoneme is atrocious on the Cepstral voices (something the old Mac voices have always had) and the Speechify ones still exhibit some pitch-breakiness but not as badly ... still enough to be damned annoying and makes me reach for the stop button after three words.

I'd rather listen to Stephen Hawking :D

AT&T has a good demo here (http://www.research.att.com/%7Ettsweb/tts/demo.php)

Considering what goes into a human making a voice sound natural, I think they have done a decent job with Alison and Alex. A lot better than the speech synth addon for the TI99/4a 20 odd years ago :-)

I would love to know what happened to the vouce Steve demoed. I figurede that was going to lead to a lot of new programs being abloe to "talk back". Its like Apple suffered "Longhorn Syndrome" and yanked all the cool stuff out of Leopard :-)

Hello,
I tried Cepstral in Leopard today, but it just stops all the time, and after reading the bug list, it's no surprise.
Are there any other female voices that at least equal Alex ?

I am trying InfoVox iVox, it works, sounds pretty good, but not as good as Alex and a $100 US.

Hopefully Apple will provide a good Female voice for us blokes in a soon update.
