Hi all,

Just got the go-ahead from Mother (along with her credit card information) to buy some RAM for Christmas. I'm currently using two 256MB (I know, disgusting) DDR SDRAM (PC3200 200Mhz) chips, and want to upgrade from that, to two 1GB chips, but the same specs (unsure whether my setup will handle anything more - it's approaching four years of use).

I found some for around $72 per chip (1GB DDR-400 Apacer RAM - PC3200 184-pin), however, they're out of stock, and I want to order by RAM now! The alternative is $79 per chip (1GB - DDR-400 - Kingston RAM, PC3200 CL3 184-Pin DIMM [KVR400X64C3A/1G]), however it's DIMM, so I'm not sure whether it'll be compatible... Any help on this matter will be appreciated!

It sounds the same as the Apacer one that you were going to buy.

Both are PC-3200, DDR400, with the same number of pins.

You could tell us what machine you'll be using it in. To me it sounds like a desktop of some sort, possibly an eMac or PowerMac?

What Mac do you have?

Might help if mention what model of machine you're trying to upgrade.

The two you've mentioned are desktop DDR and would be interchangeable. All modern memory is some form of DIMM, Dual In-line Memory Module.

But will it matter whether it's DIMM or not? That's my only issue. I know DIMMs are commonly associated with Macs, so I'm not sure about compatibility. I hate dealing with hardware :(

EDIT: It's a custom setup, but my motherboard is a DFI 661FX-MLV(E) (according to EVEREST), if that helps.

Yes it does matter if it's a DIMM (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DIMM) it has to be a DIMM (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DIMM) all memory comes in some form of DIMM (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DIMM) form factor, You won't otherwise be able to find computer memory, Mac or PC.

Oh, ok, thanks for clearing that up MightyAtom. I wasn't sure, because the Apacher didn't mention anything about DIMM...

I guess this is for a PC.

It will be fine.

Bought! After having 512MB, having 2GB is going to be awesome. Can't wait for it to arrive!

Thanks everyone! :)
