Right, let's try again - I had my questions all written nicely, then Leopard just green-screened... wierd.

1. Can I use Time Machine on an external drive that's already being used for other stuff. ie. does it bulldoze the contents of the drive, or does it just create new directories/files/etc?

2. Can two machines (a laptop and an iMac) use Time Machine with the same external drive?

Thanks!

Yes and yes. Each backup is named after the HD backed up and is in a folder named "Backups.backupdb" on the HD.

Here's another one - which is faster, USB2 or firewire for an external drive?

Firewire - it has a sustained transfer speed vs USB's burst speed

Make sure also you buy a quality Firewire HD from an Apple reseller, not some cheap piece of crap from your local Chinese Dodgy Brothers Computers.

What if your apple reseller only sells the same cheap bodgy crap from Chinese Dodgy Brothers Computers? ;)

I'd get a name brand at least...then if shit hits the fan you can at least get it replaced/repaired easily enough (talking from experience).
