POP or IMAP?

I lost about 80% of my email messages from my IMAP account when playing around with a U3 USB Drive on a Windoze machine at work.

I was extremely lucky because I had booted from my backup cloned drive the previous day (for an unrelated reason) and Mail.app had started itself at login, thus I had a 24 hour old copy of my email account.

I stumbled across this webpage (http://kb.wisc.edu/wiscmail/page.php?id=4062) via Google which provided steps to archive and restore IMAP accounts.

Restoring the messages was laborious, but successful - phew! Lucky escape! Only lost <24 hours email. Imagine if the backup was 3 months old . . .

Can't wait for Time Machine to arrive!

There is also this very simple solution http://www.mazadigital.com/

There is a free version and a Pro version for $US9.95

Works well and much simpler than previous post (which is still good :p)

it may sound like over-kill but i would recommend a mac application called superduper and just back up your whole mac library. sure its capable of more than just saving the mail you want to keep and it costs money but its a great program that will save you tears in many ways, easy to restore from

and no i dont work for them :)

Great program Except at present it does not seem to work with Leopard (which will have Time Machine)
