View Full Version : iBook install disks: G3 to G4?

Can i use the mac os install disks from a G4 ibook on a g3 ibook that has lost its disks? the disks are 10.3.9 the g3 is 10.3.4

Disks are generally model specific so probably not

If you boot up the G3 in firewire target disk mode, then boot up an OSX installer disc in the computer it was made for (e.g. an OSX for iBook G4 DVD in an iBook G4), you can install it to the other computer (the G3) via firewire.

All you need is a standard 6-6 firewire cable (every mac-tech's best friend).

Yeah, it's somewhat sneaky... keep in mind that you will have to have the same architecture of computer (you can't use a Macbook to install onto a G4: Intel->Intel and PPC->PPC only).

If you start up your mac holding down the "T" key, then your mac will act like an external firewire hard drive (this is called "Firewire target disk mode"). Hook it up with a firewire cable to your G4, then away you go.

ok another dumb question..........can i backup said g3 to to the g4's hard disk? and heres the kicker can you tell me where all the files are hidden ie photos and music and stuff im not sure if iphoto/tunes shotguns them through he system or not

oh and i have disks for a G4 ibook 14" 1.33 cdrw combo the G3 is a 800mhz 256 ram and i think 15 gig hdd and who do i hold respnible if it goes pear shaped?

hmmm now thats such a sneaky way of installing an OS.....wonder if i can find tiger machine now hehe for me!
