View Full Version : iPhone native 3rd party apps

A question for iPhone owners (there seem to be a few now)...

... what third party web 2.0 and native iPhone apps are you using / do you think are good to use?

By installing SSH/Fugu in my quest to get YouTube working (it finally is thank God), I discovered this wonderful new world of native iPhone apps and am liking it a lot.

I've managed to get Installer, Launcher, Terminal and NES loaded onto my iPhone, and use the web app for Bejeweled every so often. But there seems to be a lot of development going on, and to be honest I can't even begin to find all the goodies around, so it'd be great to share what info we all have about them.

I found most of the apps I installed through iPhone Atlas.

[EDIT] There's a nice list of native apps here (http://www.modmyiphone.com/nativeapps/the-list/).

There's a nice list of native apps here (http://www.modmyiphone.com/nativeapps/the-list/).Thanks for the pointer to the impressive list. This is not area that I follow, so could you please tell me if there's yet much "chatter" about the likely success in similarly cracking into the iPod iTouch?

I would imagine that the Jailbreaking and SSH installation procedure would likely be similar, so
these would definitely have a place on the iPod Touch.

Once these start getting out to people, I'm sure we'll start seeing implementations of the process for the Touch.

I've got to admit, once I got past the squeemishness of repeated jailbreaks and restores, I'm actually loving the process - makes the iPhone truly feel like a mobile OS X platform rather than a pretty, but closed, iPod.

installing apptap (aka installer) certianly makes things easier.

OziMac

I'm a little stumped by AppTapper undertow - it seems the range of apps available through it is quite limited. Half of the stuff I had to install myself through SSH.

Do you know how to use it to install apps not available through the Installer interface, or find additional apps not on the main screen?

Interesting little article. (http://www.gearlog.com/2007/09/apples_joswiak_we_dont_hate_ip.php)

I'm unsure of the legitimacy of this article, but from what it says, it appears that Apple will not condone 3rd party development on the iPhone (and iPod Touch?).

So does this mean that if we jailbreak our iPhone's, our AppleCare warranty will still be valid?

OziMac
12th September 2007, 04:50 PM
Given that you can always restore the firmware of the iPhone through recovery mode, I can't see how jailbreaking would be a problem for AppleCare - unless you damage the hardware in the process somehow, and tey could trace it back (unlikely I would think).

But what happens when my iPhone just doesnt want to turn on one day? Or i smash the screen to pieces. Will i be able to revert the machine back to its unaltered state with those variables?

He, if you smash your screen, the "mods" wont be the biggest issue claiming on you warranty.

This has nothing to do with warranty status.

It's simply a statement that Apple doesn't care. That being said, hardware modification will void your warranty, software will not.

There is a selection in Installer marked 'Community Source' or some such, which revealed a range of extra apps.

I know I should have put this in one of the stickied threads, but I think that it relates to many of the threads.

Jobs says Apple will fight iPhone unlocking hacks (http://www.computerworld.com/action/article.do?command=viewArticleBasic&articleId=9037398&pageNumber=1)

I read all the reports on the special event, but I for some reason didn't see this mentioned. Strange considering it's quite an important issue.

Anyways, here it is from the horses mouth! They are going to fight iPhone Sim hacks. Not that it wasn't expected...

Bad news for us =/

They say that but im not sure they really care. They may break some things but im not convinced they are going to go out of there way to break everything

Possibly not. I can see why they would stop the exploits used to unlock the iPhone from working but why would they re-lock already unlocked iPhones? What would that actually achieve other than annoying lots of people who don't actually have access to the iPhone yet?

I was more irritated by his "The iPod touch is training wheels for the iPhone." remark. Doesn't bode well for Apple fixing the calendar on the iPod Touch.

I dunno, with with rumours of high revenue shares (http://www.ubergizmo.com/15/archives/2007/09/40_revenue_share_for_apple_in_o2_iphone_deal.html) and with numerous huge markets still yet to be targeted i can see them trying to stop these hacks somehow.

It's a mobile phone for peat sake. If they made a new update every month, which rendered my iPhone useless for 1 or 2 days until some new hacks came out, well i at least would be in a bit of a bind, cant imagine what the business people would have to say about this. It's not just an iPod which you can stop using, to some people its a vital part of their life.

So all you software engineers. Is it possible for apple to render these hacks useless once a month? Surely it cant be that hard.

OziMac
19th September 2007, 08:34 PM
You don't have to update your iPhone's firmware when it gets updated by Apple - the only reason you might choose to is if you want any new functionality / bug fixes offered by it, or if iTunes stops working with it (less likely).

And yes, you should have put it in this thread originally. ;)

Ok, considering how long its gonna take for 3G, I guess, its gonna take that long for GPS to be built into the iPhone, although I suspsect they will be come at the same time (fingers crossed).

Anyway, here is an article on engadget about a virtual GPS that you can try for free for 15days http://www.engadget.com/2007/09/19/navizon-virtual-gps-system-now-iphone-friendly/

Anyone wiling to give it a go ?. Im still recovering from my not techie attempt at unlocking my phone. Im not quite ready for taking the plunge and trying something else just yet :)

I've had a look at the Facebook app in Safari (http://iphone.facebook.com) - I'm very very impressed.

I use that all the time on my iPhoney... yeah, it's sad, I don't have an iPhone so I use that...

iBrate - Proof of concept app which turns on/off the vibrate function of your iPhone.

Reminds me of:

#482620 +(588)- [X]
sigmaflare: So there's this app for my phone called 'torch'
sigmaflare: It just makes the screen white so you can use it as a flashlight.
sigmaflare: And that got me thinking... I wonder why nobody has made an app that just makes the phone constantly vibrate.

And last but not least, I wish there was an "iChat Mobile" app that would be able to save its logs in the same format as the real iChat (some strange xml-type form it would appear) so I could log onto Google Talk (and AIM and probably Bonjour) and be able to use them for real-time text chat (much cheaper than SMS) and be able to save my chat logs, and VOIP in the same application (But for that I could just get Skype).

If any Apple person reads this, I want my chat logs as well as chat functionality.

Apple sanctioned 3rd party native apps won't be available until the SDK is released, in Feb 2008. If you want third party apps before then, Apple won't have anything that will in any way help you. There was an interesting observation on ModMyiFone (http://modmyifone.com/forums/showthread.php?t=14575) yesterday:

"I found an interesting folder when searching through my Xcode 3.0 folders, applications (e.g. Applications, Xcode, Dashcode etc…) and such today; the folder is named "SDKs" which was placed in the "Developer" folder. I open this up and sure enough, I found a folder named "iPhone". I don't really know what this is all about per say, but I have a hunch that this maybe for something more to come. I heard that Steve Jobs is appearitly working on a SDK so maybe that is some of it, but I did see a folder named "UIKit" in there so maybe all you have to do is compile some stuff and you have a SDK. I am not all that sure, what do you guys think about this?"

Anyone here with XCode 3.0 installed yet?

If your phone is already activated, you can get to http://jailbreakme.com (on your phone) and install appsnapp which will give you the installer app we all talk about. Through this you should be able to get the apps. You'll need to install "Community Services" to get access to the listings.

Be careful though not to install stuff your phone doesn't need if its already unlocked. Did you do it yourself or did you buy it that way ... if the latter, you should find out what method was used. Its information you're going to need further down the track (or maybe even before you install appsnapp). Others will have more info.

HI Folks,

If anyone else is using the dictionary application, weDict, and has updated it to the new 0.5 version, you may have stumbled across a difficulty - namely that it no longer manages to find any words.

Fortunately this is just a weird little change in the way it works and is easily fixed. Basically you have to tap on the "i" for "info" button (which is quite hard to do, but persevere with tapping away until it registers) and then select the dictionary modules you want to search in. You can select them all. It will then work, and you only have to do this once.

More info from the developers here (http://blog.psmxy.org/2007/11/30/iphone-and-ipod-touch-application-and-package-updates-18/).

Cheers,

Nathan

open the sendsong app on your iPhone. then choose the song you want as a ringtone. then choose "send to ringtones" from the list that comes up. then close the sendsong app and go to Settings> Sounds>Ringtone and then choose the song you sent to ringtones.

Shoplist is in its own repo, at Trivialware.

Add the following to your installer sources:
http://mazinger.cs.yale.edu/iphone-apps/index.xml

I got the repo URL from http://iappcat.com which I have posted about elsewhere and which seems to have been roundly ignored. The big repo lists are hopelessly outdated (updates do NOT remove dead sources) and iappcat seems to keep up to date.

Its less of a hassle entering the repos one by one than allowing an install of dozens of sources which are dead and then having to remove them manually. Also, repos like Trivialware haven't yet been listed in the biggies.

[edit] Check for dead and new repositories at http://iappcat.com/repositories

New discovery: an app to fix your weather icon. ie if it won't show the icon as defined by the theme you use, this app is supposed to fix that. On my phone it not only doesn't fix it, it makes the weather app invisible, and uninstalling leaves weather invisible. I'm now looking for a fix to the fix.

1.1.3/ziphone/osxGUI from 1.1.2 unlocked with anysim 1.2.1u

YMMV

[edit] Its not a permissions issue and tools like poof see it as being present and visible. bah!
[edit #2] Solution found at H-t0sh... seems like the permission I set did not take. Did it via terminal.
chmod 644 /Applications/Weather.app/Info.plist
Then reboot your phone.

All fixed.

Shame about the app tho. Doesnt work.

Does anyone know of a sheet music scrolling app for the iphone?
Ideally you would be able to store all of musical scores and see 3 or 4 bars on screen at once. By tapping the beats of the first bar you could set the scrolling speed and then away you go with the score scrolling away until you get to the end.
If anyone knows of an app like this then I want it.

Instant messaging on the iphone has been a bit patchy lately... we have had Apollo (dead) MobileChat (ok, but not as good as it could be) as well as Beejive (http://www.jivetalk.com) and Meebo (http://www.meebo.com) on the web.

Then along came Fring (http://www.fring.com), which I have been using for some time... and today when I checked installer for new stuff (not checking s often as I used to) I discovered that Agile Messenger (http://www.agilemobile.com/iphone.html) is now available for iPhone and it seems to be free.

Now if you want to do Skype/VoIP, Fring is your only choice. But if you want to do text messaging with extras, Agile messenger is the go. I have only used it for a short time but geez its cool. Love it. You can even snap pix with yr phone and send them right away to your messaging mate. lovely. Keep both on board for the best of both worlds. :)
