I heard some people in the US got their iPhones on a prepaid data plan. Any chance of this happening in Australia?

I'm still a little torn deciding whether to get the iPod Touch or wait it out for the iPhone....but i'm not really ready to pay anything over $50 a month in regards to bills. Hard choice

And is unlocking phones legal in Australia like it is in the US?

Thanks!

Hadn't heard of that and it seems unlikely. My hope is that, once the initial contract expires, you'll be able to have any plan you like (including pre-paid) on the preferred carrier.

There is a pre-paid plan available - Basically the people who are getting it are those with a bad credit rating. if you enter a dud social security number when you sign up, it will activate as a prepaid service.

El Jobso did say that Apple wants to make the iPhone more affordable so more people can buy it. I think you'll see a few changes to the pricing plans in the next year probably to include another prepaid plan and to make the plans themselves more affordable.
