View Full Version : Pre-paid mobile internet in Australia. Does it exist?

Hi all just wondering if pre-paid mobile internet exists here in Australia? Here's my situation. I'm doing some traveling around australia at the end of the year, cities mainly. I want to take my iBook along and have internet access when I need it. I don't want to have to pay hotel internet access prices. Ideally I'd like to get one of those usb broadband internet thingies. Trouble is all the main phone companies only offer internet plans. I don't need to have a mobile internet plan, as I will not need to use it that often. What I'd like is some sort of pre-paid option, where I can pay up front for my internet and top it up the next time I go traveling and need to take along my iBook.

Anyone got any ideas on how I can achieve this? Does this option of pre-pay internet even exhist, and if not why?

First off, as much as this forum is a really good forum, you are much better off asking this question on Whirlpool (http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/), people are discussing this very point over there.

But it seems that the two companies that I remember having it, have stopped.

Unwired has a prepaid service, not sure if it's what you're looking for though.

If you're on Telstra, you can buy data packs during the month that you need it. So Telstra prepaid might be an option if you've got a NextG compatible phone.

Optus launched prepaid Mobile Broadband with a USB key this week, but it doesn't work on the Mac.

Three will launch it shortly here, it just came out this week on Three UK. Things usually follow 4-6 weeks from there. I would think prepaid data for phones on Three should also be available around the same time.
