After some major frustration in dealing with Adobe I got a definitive answer today.
I've sent the company several emails (none of which were answered) and called several times (getting different info each time).
Current situation is this - if you have a box of Adobe software for Windoze that is eligible for an upgrade you don't need a letter of destruction.
You buy your upgrade for mac (I'm moving from InDesign 2.0 to CS3 Design Standard) - give Adobe a call and have your two serial numbers at hand.
They say that within 10 minutes you'll have the info you need to license your new Mac Adobe software.

I just had to post this - it's been frightfully frustrating.

WOW!

Great outcome, past experience with Macromedia was a negative on that front.

Can you please take your post and frame it please?

That was my experience. The support staff were very helpful and the upgrade was smooth. This was back in the days of CS1. :)
