I don't believe VPC can use the internal modem on the hosting operating system... Although someone might correct me on that...

i was under the impression that it could.

ethernet - yes
external usb modem - yes
internal modem - think so but don't ask me for sure.

A few points to try:-

1. If you're using shared networking, you must be connected on the Mac
side first. Then Windows will 'share' your Mac's connection. Change
your Windows network config to Lan, not modem.

or

2. You have to go to PC and choose Settings (or click on Settings in
Virtual PC List) and choose a com port and put it to modem
Then in Windows XP, go to Add Hardware and install a Standard 56000 modem.

or

3. You may have to switch to shared sockets because you are on dial up. Go to
Preferences and turn on the Scripts and then with the PC turned off (not
running) go to the Scripts menu, choose set networking type and switch to
shared sockets.

I tried my best

I'd agree with all of that (except for the internal modem).

The only reason I have to use VP is that I have to use pcanywhere software so I can conect to a work computer from home, in the virtual pc settings under com1 it says mac serial port modem its really giving me the si#@t's I'm connected to cable so I dont use the modem I've even partitioned my second hard drive and instaled OSX on the partition so I could instal vpc still no good the conection is straight over the phone line so I dont think I ccould go through cable?

If your work gave you vpn access (like mine does) then the windows VPC would just ethernet device which is detected and pretend to be a pc on my network. Much like vmware machines do on host operating systems.

Hard luck about having to use dialup with pcanywhere to connect to the remote machine.

I've not checked VPC pages @ microsoft. I had hoped too, but got busy with work doing a few support cases.

i can only connect (if it would work) direct on a dedicated phone number, to a host computer which has pcAnywhere so that i can monitor equipment, all set up buy the It Dep all pc based I'm the only one with a Mac at home and they dont have a clue about macs! so i'm on my own

You could always try connecting, then sharing the internet connection (if you can, share it on loopback, otherwise, share it on your ethernet connection) then you should be able to access the ethernet port from inside virtual PC. You would dial-up from the mac, and just be connected on the PC end.
