Hi all,
i have a g4 1 ghz ibook and the internal modem seems tempermental. More than half the time the modem won't dialup properly.
Also I can't get sound to happen with the modem so i can' t tell if it's dialing up properly-even when i'vve selected sound on in modem in network setup.
quite frustrating.. can anyone help? thanks in advance

if it's within warranty - i'd get it looked at asap. (if no one comes up with a fix-all solution in this thread)

my ibook NEVER connects properly through the toolbar modem option. i always have to open Internet Connect and dial that way, even though i've used the same provider for years...

My old ibook had the same quirk, as did a friends.

My iBook does this too. Especially after several days uptime. Occasionally it won't even find a dialtone at all, or it will take more than a minute to dial.

Rebooting fixes this. So it is my belief that it is a software problem. People who were around for the introduction of 10.0 might remember that a similar dialup bug came and went for a long time before apple got it right.

My iBook has never had this problem. When I first bought it, I set up my Internet Connection and since then i've always connected via the toolbar....
Must be lucky I guess. :P

Well I'm glad I'm not alone. I've tried rebooting and it doesn't always work. Always open Internet Connect and that doesn't help either. Even tried different length modem cables and that didn;t do anything either. Must be a software issue or dodgey modem.
Yep still within warranty so I'll take it to get looked at.

Thatís great to tell us, but what about a solution? And I have 10.3.7 with the same issue! It did work when I first got the ibook new 5 months ago.

Similar problems here, although my iBook locks up when I try to access the modem at all now :( It's always been flaky, likely dead now.

Some tips however. Go to System Preferences>Network>Internal Modem>Modem tab, try in order:

- Turn OFF "Wait for dial tone before dialing"
- Change modem script from "Apple Internal 56K Modem v.90" to "Apple Internal 56K Modem V90 v.34"
- Turn OFF error compression and error checking

Hope they help.

Once had this problem on one of my friends Macs. Sometimes the iMac would get a kernel panic too. It seems to only do that if you have 10.3.5 or above. Before 10.3.5 he had no problems at all.

Think mine is faulty because I didn't plug in back in properly :) Will dismantle it soon, just very annoying at present, being on dial-up all the time.
