View Full Version : Network log-ins

G'day all,

We have a Mac server and number of Mac clients that connect to it using AFP. The problem is that log-ins have to be set up on each machine individually.

Is there a way to setup network log-ins such that the users and passwords may be set up on the server and users can log into any Mac without having to have an account pre-setup on the individual machines? (Like roaming profiles in Windows, but we don't care about the home directory structure being mirrored as with "My Documents". I hope I'm making sense.)

TIA!

Short answer....yes

long answer....you will need to run and configure Open Directory on your server. http://www.apple.com/server/macosx/opendirectory.html

Yes its possible and pretty easy

OSX server documentation makes it easy

Thanks for the help peoples! Greatly appreciated.

Just wondering what you mean by "OSX server documentation" - I can only find a "Getting Started" guide in terms of printed material. (Mind you I wasn't here when the server arrived.)

Also, http://www.apple.com/server/macosx/opendirectory.html has limited info, but the Open Directory (http://www.apple.com/server/macosx/server/docs/Open_Directory_TB_v10.4.pdf) and other "Technology Briefs" links seem to be missing. :(

Please point me to TFMs :)

Thanks again!

Ah, these guys are assuming that your Mac server is actually running Mac OS X Server... is it?

If you go to the help menu from server admin that will give you an option to view manuals

You need at least one main server running Mac OS X Server for this to be set up.
