I want to change the file for X11 that makes the initial xterm appear, I believe /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.

However not long ago I had to reset my password for my computer because it had been so long since I had internet I had forgotten my password. It seems as though this did not change the password for superuser so I am only able to read this file and not edit it.

Anyone able to help me out?

In terminal do

sudo su -

Then enter in your users password

That will give you root access :)

Otherwise
sudo vi /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc

Which would then prompt for your password to use sudo and then use vi to edit the file you want as root user privileges

Don't edit the system version of the file! Take a copy of it to your personal .xinitrc

cp /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc ~/.xinitrc

and then edit that one.
