Hi there,

I'm eagerly awaiting the arrival of my new MBP 2.2GHz and am getting all my software ready and all my files to be transferred from my other laptop to the new MBP.

I use outlook on my windows laptop and have 1000s of emails on it. Is it possible to transfer these emails to Outlook 2004 for mac, which is the program I plan to use. I'm pretty sure this cant be done with Mail can it?

If not, it is no big deal as I will forward on the important ones slowly and store the rest on my other windows desktop machine.

I don't want to install boot camp or anything on the MBP as I now have no use for windows as I have found an appropriate share trading platform that works on mac. No more windows ever! :D

Thanks,

Dean

There's a program called O2M (http://www.littlemachines.com/) which imports the Outlook file into Entourage (Microsoft's equivalent of Outlook on the Mac) or into Mail, iCal and Address Book. I think most people would agree that Mail, iCal and Address Book are a much better solution than Entourage. Entourage feels like a classic app and is not universal.

I second this.

The Apple Mail program is better tahn anything else out there that I have found, and is integrated throughout OSX, Photo booth/Iphoto/address book/comic life etc etc...and I can't wait to try out the new features in Leopard.

You say " No more windows ever"... so ditch entourage and "get with the program Dude!":p

Or if you don't want to buy the cheap P2M, I moved everything from Outlook on my PC to Outlook Express on my PC...
created my IMAP .Mac email account in Outlook Express - and copied all my emails into that folder... which synced them all onto the .Mac server.

Then just opened up my PowerBook, created the same .Mac IMAP account on my PowerBook - and VOILA all the emails appeared with the original dates / sender details etc just like I received them originally!

O2M does contacts though i think too - which is a handy addition.

I did the same thing by creating running an IMAP account off my own computer. That way I can always access my saved messages with any email program I want. I can even access my saved emails from other computers on my network.
All open-source software, I've written a terminal script to install it if you need help.
The binaries are here:
ftp://ftp.cac.washington.edu/imap/imap.tar.Z
Instructions are here:
http://www.npcole.com/usingimaptiger.html

Once you're running the IMAP server, Make all your folders on your new IMAP account, then copy the messages over! BTW, Entourage can't really cope with thousands of emails being moved in one drag.

Cheers for the advice. I always found outlook to be nice to use because it has everything built into the one program. I will buy O2M and give that a whirl and just stick to the inbuilt programs as much as possible. Are Mail and iCal in Leopard to be changed much?

Yeah quite a bit, iCal (http://www.apple.com/macosx/leopard/features/ical.html), Mail (http://www.apple.com/macosx/leopard/features/mail.html)
