But i would rather sell my soul than go to OCAU (no wait i think i do sell my soul if i join up...)
My little brother needs a laptop for TAFE, i thought maybe a pc would be better for him as hes not really computer literate and doesnt really care for them anyway and also wont need it after he finished school as hes going into a trade.

Does anyone know a reputable dealer in the goldcoast or tweed heads where we could buy him a very cheap but reliable machine?
Mac or pc?

budget is "not much" Hes a first year apprentice earning about 6 bucks an hour so my mother and I will be helping with the purchase ( and we are broke too)

Ta, Macgrrl

How much is 'not much'? I mean, there is a DSE or Harvey Norman down in South Tweed he could buy a PC laptop from or A NextByte reseller up at Bundall (or Domayne at Pac Fair) for macs?

well, under $500 under $200 even... free?? Free would be better. It doesnt have to be a new one, it just has to work. Get 3 good years out of it. Then it can die all it wants!

Not in the Gold Coast, but here in Sydney is this (http://www.secondigit.com.au/products_notebook.htm) fellow. They sell refurnished (ex lease) PC notebooks etc. Very reasonable prices, and no need to deal with someone on ebay. I've bought from them previously and had good experience. This business has been around for a number of years.

And they can courier to you too :)

I brought an IBM Thinkpad off these guys (http://www.thecomputermarket.com/Gold_Coast.asp) a few years ago, they're all ex govt stock but they clean them all up, install antivirus stuff on them and you get them for a good price.

Mine still goes 4 years on without a problem, never skipped a beat... think it might have been $600 at the time.

Hey macgrrl,

There is this wonderful thing called The Freecycle Network (http://www.freecycle.org/) & Melbourne Oz Freecycle (http://groups.yahoo.com/group/melbourneozfreecycle/)

I say this in particular as you may have great luck tonight with their...

WANTED Happy Hours 6pm till 9pm TONIGHT

Normally The Freecycle Network is about giving, but between 6pm till 9pm TONIGHT...

On SUNDAY June 17 TODAY we will have WANTED HAPPY HOUR, this will be where members can post ONE WANTED post with the items they'd like to obtain. List everything in ONE message.

WANTED HAPPY HOUR will run from 6PM to 9PM Sunday June 17, NO OFFERS DURING THIS TIME FRAME PLEASE!

RULES, everything must be appropriate for all ages, legal and not ridiculous (ie please not requests for speed boats cars etc). Please keep requests within reason for items that others are likely to have lying around. Messages must be formatted correctly or they will be deleted by mods without notice. And if you get the required item you MUST place a RECEIVED post.

If you have not made an OFFER this would be a great time to offload unwanted items, why not give them to someone who has placed a WANTED!

Hey macgrrl,

Also try MacAdvice (http://www.macadvice.com.au/), AppleBits (http://www.applebits.net/), New Wave (http://www.newwavesystems.com.au/) for second hand Macs.
