View Full Version : iStat menus beta testing

iSlayer
11th May 2007, 05:54 PM
iStat menus (http://islayer.com/index.php?op=item&id=28) is rapidly approaching beta stage so once again we are looking for beta testers.

Requirements
- Be running Mac OS X 10.4.6 or greater
- Be willing to accept risks associated with SystemUIServer plugins (AKA menu extras) - 1 extra can crash all other menu extras.
- Know how to manually edit plist files (incase of emergency)
- Know how to use console.app to view crash logs (incase of crash)

If your fine with those things and are interested in being a beta tester then post in this thread. Please include your system architecture (PowerPC or Intel) as we need to get an even mix.

We will select 10 or so people to participate in the initial beta program which is currently scheduled to start early to mid next week.

BTW What does this offer over MenuMeters? Is it just a nicer/better/more customisable interface?

It can monitor things MM cant such as fan speeds, temperatures(MM only does cpu temp from memory and doesnt support intel systems), Bluetooth kb/mouse battery levels.
iStat menus also has a clock extra that can show the time and date for locations all around the world.

And yes we like to think ours looks prettier :)

Judging by your UI work on the various widgets that I have used, I imagine it probably will be! :)

Sambo
18th May 2007, 12:16 AM
OMG just installed, this is really great. I thought the widgets were as good as your developments could get, but you guys have really outdone yourselves. The clock feature is lovely, (I prefer clicking in the menubar then going into dashboard). If the widgets weren't a good enough reason to donate already then this will be. This just feels like a $20 app to be honest, and I understand it will be released free of charge? It is quite beautiful, compared to the ugly menumeters (yes I think it's ugly) this is just great oh god I'm foaming at the mouth...

Looks good on the macbook Core2Duo. I'll install it on some other machines tomorrow and over the weekend.

I loaded up photoshop to see what happened when application items clashed with the new menubar and the application fairly gracefully eats whatever is on the right. ;) That said it's not hard to fill the entire bar on the tiny mb screen.

It looks good iSlayer, I like the drop down information. I'll let you know if I uncover any issues.

i have been using it all morning on the powerbook and all day on the intel iMac at work and can't find any other things than the PPC temp display bug, Bluetooth disable icon and the HD Bay 1 bug which are all being addressed...

also if you are building External Ip address into istat app then it would be a handy feature in istat menus as well...

future suggestions
- make the airport icon under network do the range thing like iStat Pro where the bars move up and down, but i think this would would be better in a wireless menu extra similar to coconut wifi...

- battery menu extra with support for UPS much like the apple one but with class and it would complete the istat replacement menu extras suite for the standard set of menu extras that most people run... the battery menu extra could contain the cool iStat Pro battery charging plugged in icons and the uptime statistics that are also more detailed in the rest of the istat suite...

iSlayer
18th May 2007, 05:35 PM

We do plan to do a battery extra at some point.

i have APC Backups UPS ES 500 and a USB Liebert USB UPS at work and would be happy to help as always..

have to say love the way it does the 2 separate graphs for both cores of the cpu...

just found something - when you click open Bluetooth preferences it doesn't actually open anything on my powerbook, also after turning bluetooth off and on it reports the wireless mouse and keyboard as both 100% battery life which is not correct as istat pro is reading them correctly...

but if i then go and turn the bluetooth menu extra off and on again it reads them correctly, also add links to the keyboard prefs pane and mouse prefs pane much like the standard apple bluetooth menu extra...

The Architect.mac
18th May 2007, 05:54 PM
with regard to the open bluetooth preferences the 'Setup bluetooth device' also needs hooking up..

on another note - everynow and then bluetooth can go funky after a bluetooth headset or something bungs out and the apple bluetooth menu extra has a icon for that as well something like ' bluetooth not recognised' but its prob not worth investigating as most peoples bluetooth should be either on or off - not broken

- but it does need an icon for devices connected as well i reckon

- are you going to add the useless buttons from the apple bluetooth menu extra - send file and browse device..

iSlayer

if possible the install intel sensors button should be greyed out on PPC systems... by clicking it on the powerbook it stopped the sensors from being available and went to N/A but they are still working as such up in the menu (well actually i cant tell because of the PPC temp display bug)...

and in the network prefs pane it shouldn't reference TX and RX anymore as all of your recent updates istat pro and nano and the display in istat menus all refer to it as In and Out... and i assume istat app will forllow this trend in its next update...

A new beta is available to all testers. I've sent most of you a pm already. It's at the same url as the previous beta anyway.
There are some big changes with this beta so please test it thoroughly.

Change List:

Added an Installer
Added Updater checker
Fixed temperature bugs on PowerPC systems
Major structural changes to reduce number of images
Faded icon for when bluetooth is turned off.
Bluetooth battery levels update properly after bluetooth has been turned off/on.
Bluetooth item in preference pane is disabled if system does not have bluetooth.
Intel sensors module installer is now properly hidden on PowerPC systems.
New disk and memory icons in preference pane
Fixed pixelation in disks filtering table.
New intel sensors module

Now that the update checker is in place you will be notified of future beta's automatically

My temps and fans are broken in beta 3 :(

Never mind, I have just figured out I had to re-download the sensor module dealie. Should this be required after an update?

iSlayer
23rd May 2007, 08:46 PM
you will need to install the new Intel sensors module from the pref pane. We will make that more clear before the final release

Should this be required after an update?
For some of the beta's yes. Once it hits 1.0 the only time you will need to update it will be if we are adding support for new sensors.

We might intergrate that into the main installer in the future to make it more obvious

islayer & marc indicated that those who missed out on the initial beta release will get an opportunity to trial the 'final' beta before public release as i understood it.

i guess at some point they will post a link on MTAU and we will all be able to have a play!

I just had a chance to finally check this out... firstly, the UI is very well done. The only things that I found disappointing were:

- No "read/write" indicators for the HDD. In menumeters, there are two little arrows, one for read and one for write.

- No full breakdown of memory. Free/Used doesn't actually give you the full story, since a lot of free memory will become inactive after running your mac for a while, but the iStat menu doesn't let you see this.

These two features are both in menumeters - and unless you guys get them in iStat menus, I'm gonna be running iStat menus + menumeters! By the way, what's the point of the bluetooth menu? It has less items then the OSX one...? I actually use the "Browse Device" item in the OSX menu, so I'm not going to be changing that one over any time soon.

It's on the list. Probably wont be in 1.0

The "Free" value shown is actually a combination of free and inactive so its kind of what you want.

By the way, what's the point of the bluetooth menu ?.

It does one thing the apple one doesnt which is show battery levels for wireless keyboard and mice

Currawong

iSlayer: You might change "free" to "unused" as it's closer to what you mean.

forgie
25th May 2007, 11:16 PM
Well that's more useful - I'd somehow communicate that fact.... although I understand that the simplification is well, more simple for beginners, it's technically misleading.

Anyway, I'm now running half/half menumeters and iStat menus. I like the "piechart" view for memory in MM. It basically does a coloured piechart for memory usage (wired, used, inactive, free).

iStat menus should notify all of you about the update at some stage assuming you have the update checker enabled

When you have the Date & Time option enabled, and the Mode set to "Icon Only", it displays the month as a number... I would find that today's date would be much more useful. I often go to my dashboard just to find out what date it is - I never forget what month it is! :)

After using iStat menus for a few days, I have come to appreciate the UI quality - are you just using different font sizes to MM, or are you using a different API or something? The fonts look much smoother and more pleasing to the eye.

It looks like you will have won "The Battle For Forgie's Menubar" in no time at all! Keep up the good work guys!

I actually installed another utility for this explicit purpose about 2 weeks ago, but removed it because it was causing crashes. Narrowing down my menu bar addons to just one would be great. (One menubar addon to rule them all?)

Speaking of "one menubar to rule them all" - something you might consider in the future is a menu bar addition that can set one away or whatever in every IM client one has open. Might be a bit impossible if not every IM client is scriptable, but for me, Adium, iChat and Skype all together would be fantastic.

The installer says that you should logout and login to complete installation - all you really have to do is kill the SystemUIServer process. It'll re-launch itself within 3-4 seconds, and the updated iStat Menus will be there. This would be nice to have incorporated into the installer - logging out for an install unnecessarily isn't very user friendly.

forgie
29th May 2007, 05:23 PM
I like the colours on the MM hard disk activity indicator - red and green make it much easier to see what's happening at a glance. Customisable colours would be great!

Yep but killing a core system process isnt that nice either. We might think about adding an option to do it but the default action will always be a restart

I don't think that killing SystemUIServer will have any negative consequences apart from refreshing your menu bar anyway... I could be wrong here. You're right though, it should probably be optional.
