I have a 3rdGen 20GB and I've been told that the best way to make sure the battery lasts is to put it back on the dock anytime I'm finished using it - ie better to have it top up the battery and sit fully charged on the dock rather than fully recharge from scratch each time. I only ever use it in block of 1-2 hours at the absolute most...am I doing the right thing here?

Also wondering whether I should purchase an extended warranty once the one year anniversary of the pod purchase comes up...

aslong as you use the battery every few days it will be fine.
if you let it sit for weeks at a time the battery will lose charge.

extended warrenty is usually not worth it.
the most common problem with ipods is the battery but its not a certinty that apple will replace it anyway

'opinion' seems to be to charge before it gets to empty, and try not to let it go to empty too often.

as for warranty....! i got my warranty 11 months into ownership after having it replaced for a hdd problem, and since then i've sent it back because the battery on the first replacement was crap. my current iPod is fine, but for the extra money (they were also offering a free mini dock or remote/earphones with a purchase of applecare, though not sure if it's still running) i also have peace of mind for the next two years :)
