I've downloaded and installed a few demo's over the last few months, and a couple of them have installed themselves a little helper in the system preferences area. They show up in the Other section. I've since got rid of these apps but their legacy remains in the system prefs area, can I remove them from here too?

Right click and you should get th option to remove 'blah' pane.

Or browse to ~/Library/PreferencePanes or /Library/PreferencePanes to remove them.

yes - right click on them and you will see 'remove pref pane'

you can also download appzapper and it will list your prefpanes and you can remove them, and it might pick up some other associated prefpane files so you can remove those too...

They're usually in /Library/PreferencePanes/ (for those accessible to all users) or, I think, in ~/Library/PreferencePanes/ for those accessible to just your user. Moving the extras you don't need out of there will remove them from System Preferences.
