Is there any way to get iCal to automatically load when I turn on my Mac? I've set it to open on log-in but then the program actually shows on the screen that way (don't want to have to close it down to the dock everytime) and all I want it to do is sit in the dock with the little arrow next to it so it shows the current date. Any ideas?

When you set iCal as a log in item in System Preferences, there is a little checkbox the the left which allows you to hide the application after it starts up :)

Yeah, what Goodbye said.

Did you know that if you press Apple+W in iCal, the iCal window will close, but the Application itself will stay open? And you will therefore get the updated date?

Or hiding the app, Apple-H, will do the same.
