View Full Version : OS 9.2 on a beige G3

3rd March 2004, 07:31 PM
My friend has a beige g3 powermac (the desktop version) i'm pretty sure it has

4gb hard drive
64 mb ram
8mb GRFX

a zip drive 24x CD-ROM scsi etc etc etc

Its running os 8.6 Atm and its a bit slow on the uptake (lacks some good features of os9.2)

Is it possible to install 9.2 or will it be irregularly sl o w?

as its not my machine, a performance decrease will not go down well!

Since it's supported by jaguar (the machine itself anyway) OS 9.2 should work just as fine as 8.6. You may see a very small decrese in performance, as the OS itself is actually *bigger* than 8.6, but you also should be able to do everything as on 8.6 "and then some" like iTunes ;)

I would also suggest more memory :)

Jimbo, i say this to every beige g3 owner. Up the ram, get a bigger hd and put 10.2 on it.

9.2 will run fine.

It has a 128GB limitation on the firmware, so 120GB would be a sweet spot. And yes, IDE is the norm on beige G3s - just use the usual Apple HD Setup (under OS 8 or 9x) to format it. Make sure the RAM you pick up for it is double-sided - 128 single sided and below should be OK, but 256 sticks must be double-sided.

Get more RAM. If performance is the issue this is the one thing that is going to make a meaningful difference. Even another 64 MB will deliver noticeable gains. 64 MB is not a lot for any newer OS to work with and you should be able to russle up some DIMMS?? for it without TOO much trouble. (if it uses DIMMS and they are expensive or hard to find you may be able to salvage or purchase an old ppc 604 clone for not much and use the 64 MB it will probably have)

cheers, kim

EDIT 1 5/3/04 7:35 pm: Re: post below. I could probably supply you with a couple of really cheap 64 MB SIMMs then.

Unless you're going to run X at some point in the future, stick with 9.1. Its faster and more stable than 9.2.

yep, and 9.1 has none of the 3rd party usb card issues that may pop up on installing a pci usb card

Some important things to note: Beige G3 Desktops don't take RAM that is any taller than the shortest available - because at the time all PC66 RAM was very short. You'll find out the hard way that PC100 RAM, though it will fit, most of it wont allow the case to close, because there mesh over the fan under the power supply sticks out, and that sits directly over the RAM.

The IDE in those machines is very slow, which will affect OSX a bit (ie: OSX is a system that has a default of around 200,000 file system entries alone, which means much disk activity). Also, the video hardware built in isn't anything to write home about.

10.2 is quite usable on a beige G3, but it can feel slow. It will run solidly though. However, the cost of fixing up such a machine to run OSX really well is about the cost of a second-hand G4, which would run it much better.

good point, he sold it for a ton anyways! :D
