View Full Version : Drive Replacements for a cube

I have recently almost purchased a g4 cube, thanks Asher, it has a slot loading optical drive of some description, i will be putting os 10.3 on it if i can find a cheap copy somewhere.

So in your technical opinions, what drives can be put into cubes? I already know that slot loading ones are required, and they are smaller than regular 5.25 inch drives. I've been to xlr8 and its pretty ambiguous, so i was hoping someone has a cube they are willing to disect and take some pics?

welcome to the club Jimbo! www.cubeowner.com is without a doubt the ultimate resource for cube owners. There's also a mailing list which you can subscribe to at http://www.themacintoshguy.com/lists/Cube.html

If it's not already come onto your radar, there's a company called MCE that sells upgrade optical drives for the cube. see http://www.mcetech.com/dvdrwpmg4cube.html

I found the pricing a little high, and would just get an external firewire drive instead if I were you...

In regards to HDD though, I'd certainly recommend seagate barracudas. I put an Baraccuda IV 80gb in my cube a couple of years ago and it made it even quieter as it's one of the fluid bearing drives.

BTW, if you're interested in upgrading the standard ATI 16mb video card inside your cube to a geforce 2mx 32mb one (with ADC and VGA ports), let me know. I might be interested in selling mine for the right price, since my cube is no longer my main machine...

Just did a check on ebay.com for completed auctions on the same card, and the range was around US$170-US$200 generally. The cheapest one went for US$146, which according to xe.net is AU$192. So I reckon AU$180 would be a decent asking price.

No worries though if that's too much. I don't mind keeping it. I'm just not really using it, so I don't mind if it sells.
