View Full Version : iStat nano 1.8 beta (Intel fans & temps)

marc
3rd January 2007, 09:25 AM
Please help us test iStat nano 1.8 on Intel Macs

We finally have our own fan and temperature module for Intel Macs, so SpeedIt is no longer required. The code we've used to get temperatures and fan speeds is based on GPL licensed code, which prevents us from including the code directly in the widget. However, we have created an installer that works from inside the widget so getting everything up and running is easy.

If you'd like to help us test the new fans and temperature extension, then please:
Download this version of iStat nano (http://islayer.com/software/istat_nano/isat_nano_1.8.zip) and install it. You should be asked if you'd like to automatically install the Intel fan & temps extension. Please do that.
If that fails, then please follow the instructions here (http://islayer.com/support/?p=20) to install it manually.

Once you're done, you should be able to see fan speeds and temps. Please post below with your results!

Thanks.

Installed without trouble on my Mac Mini 1.66

Currently reading ~1736rpm fan speed, and 58 - 61 degrees (moving around a bit) iStat Pro using the SpeedIt extension is reading 62 degrees.

Dont want to alarm you but MacBook pro fans dont run at 0rpm unless they are dead(as far as i know).

Yep. There's 2 ways.

#1 - Use the iStat application*: http://islayer.com/index.php?op=item&id=25
#2 - Use "Dev mode" of Dashboard to drag the widget out. Instructions here: http://islayer.com/support/?p=13

* iStat application DOESN'T support Intel Mac fans and temps via this method yet, but it will really soon (version 2.1).

we have just uploaded new versions of the widget and the intel bundle
Mac Pro's and 24" imacs should hopefully be supported now and more temperature sensors are supported on alot of systems.

You will need to upgrade the widget and delete the intel bundle so you can download the new version.
The intel bundle is in /Users/YOURUSERNAME/Library/Application Support/iSlayer/iStat/
Just delete the file then go to the back of the widget by clicking on the info button on the top right and you can resinstall it from there

Main Heatsink A : 42c

it will only detect 1 value per cpu not per core.Thats all you can get without using kernel extensions.
There is a Main Heatsink B value but due to lack of space in istat nano it wont be displayed in most cases

Is the istat pro widget going to support fans and temps for intel real soon also? I was very surprised to discover my Core Duo iMac has three fans - I have never (and I mean literally never) heard any fan noise coming from my Mac. I figured there must be at least one, but there's three and I never hear them? The Core Duo iMac's guts must be a huge improvement over the G5 iMac, since on my dad's the fan noise is quite loud whenever it has a lot to do.
