Hi all

here's my desktop

Nothing fancy...the usual anti Windows Propeganda I spew out to my fellow Windoesn't users.

I made the desktop background myself.

Yes, you can use the imac at home.

Just VNC it, and control it from work, between Windoesn't reboots.

its alot easier to have everything readily accessible in the dock rather than having to stuff around in the applications folder. i leave most of the apps open anyway so i dont have to wait to launch them. I also did a spring clean of my dock lst week...it was much worse then ;)

also is there a chance of scoring that desktop picture?

What's that little weather app you got going there? Very neat!

pipsqeek
10th March 2004, 08:51 PM
goto: www.konfabulator.com/

Its like a Java XML etc. type thing....very technical. :P

Its comes with a few good wigets to use which float around your desktop, same as the calander at the top which I think is partially blocked by my chat client. Uses sweet fug all resources. You can select which wigets you want running, each wiget is like another app, ones to show battery charge, tv shows (although, found nothing that works here in Aust, remote controls for iTunes. There's alot of stuff.

Plus there are more on the site.

I use to have WeatherMenu running in the menu bar at the top, but it used too much resources for what it was and the accuracy of the weather was not always spot on, plus it defaults to the authors settings after a while unless you pay the fee which (being a student with no job) is a hard thing to do. WeatherMenu caused too much grief.

But this Konfabulator is great, if i could afford it I would pay the authors for this one.

I keep tabs on the weather all the time from habit of when I use to ride a motorcycle everywhere, but not I keep tabs on it for Astronomical purposes (telescopes and star gazing).

I don't think the unregistered version is disabled in any way, not that I know of, maybe if I read the ReadMe file. hmm.

Anyway

Here's my Mac desktop from the PC. Yes, believe it or not, i really am running Mac OS 8.1 on a PeeCee. I'm using a program called Basilisk II that emulates a 68k Mac (a Quadra 800, with the ROM that i'm using), and it lets you run any Mac OS up to and including 8.1, and it nearly exactly the same as it would on a real Mac, only a lot faster, seeing as though i'm using a 2 Ghz Pentium 4. Its just like having my own 2 Ghz Quadra! :D

what is that neat chat app some of you have? the one with different types in one, MSN, AIM etc?

pipsqeek
7th April 2004, 10:12 AM
You can use Fire, which I was having trouble with keeping a stable connection with MSN.

I am using Proteus at the moment which is free but they ask for donations. Which is recommended.

There is a Terminal version I think, correct me if I am wrong guys, because I am unsure. X chat or something, that I think connects to different protocols...AIM, ICQ, MSN. etc...

Fire had a good GUI, Proteus says it transfers files but I have not been able to.

Any others had much experience with different Combination Chat Clients (CCC) haha another acronym.

Steve

jameso
8th April 2004, 09:47 AM
I can recommend fire and the new upgrade should fix the msn connection issues.

http://fire.sf.net/

I'm going to try out Proteus now that i can afford it (it used to be shareware)

xchat is a irc chat application for x11, xchataqua is the macintosh version.

Atomic, your site is amazing - how did you get hold of the verax fans? Does anyone sell them in Australia?

Atomic
21st April 2004, 01:09 PM
No one sells them here however they are an extremely expensive fan no matter where you get it from and think that people here in Oz would not buy them in any great numbers. PC people are happy to put in a 20,000 rpm fan with more lights on it than in a disco that generates more noise that a 747 at take off and pay $15. Verax fans on the other hand, all they do is blow air silently (how boring) and you need to spend $50 or $60 on just for one fan.

I bought them from www.veraxfans.com . The guy that sells them over there is very prompt with his shipping and packs everything nicely but be prepared to pay. They are stupendously high priced but extremely silent.

Notes:
You will need QuickTime 6 or above to play, sorry for QuickTime 5 users. It was encoded using “Sorenson Video 3” codec. I should've used “Sorenson Video” for better compatibility.
This movie is nothing special to Mac users, but good enough to p*ss off Windows users.

Oh my god, Disko! Where the heck did you find those addons for the desktop?
They are things that come with Konfabulator.
There's a weather thing on the top right which is cool, Konfabulator's default weather widget.
and the space reamaining thing on the bottom left of the right screen. Internode usage meter widget - available for download via internode's website.
On the left screen, on the bottom left, there is a tiny temperature thing that tells Celcius. Yes, that's my cpu temp.
do you use multiple monitors? I tink you do. You'd think right ;)
Also, how did you get the Docl to be on the bottom right? With an app, i forgot which one - there are several that do it.

Heya,

There's an even easier way to do this -- install 'QuickImage' from Pixture Studio (http://www.pixture.com/macosx.php) (it's free). Allows you to do a simple right click on the image in the finder to change the format, compress the image and lots of other things. I've been using it for a while now -- it works pretty well.

Cheers -- Darren.

To change the default system icons, the program to use is CandyBar. Otherwise, if you select a folder, hard disk or whatever on the desktop, "Get Info" in the file menu or via Command-I on the keyboard, you can select the icon in the Get Info window and cut and paste it to and from other Get Info window icons.

By the way, here's a screenshot (http://currawong.net/gallery/G4Server/Server_screenshot) I took a couple of days ago of a VNC session to my server while I had drives network mounted and was running PSyncX for a backup.

One of the most intriuging animals of the world.

The closest I have come to these is snorkelling off Mystery Island and seeing an Octopus change colours, trying to either hypnotise me or blend in to the surroundings.

Where can I get that desktop? I want a link and I want it now!!

steve, you will have to PM panda about it. :) he took it himself while snorkelling, and whilst there are some pics on his website (http://users.ncable.net.au/~anewton/) they are not big enough to be desktop images.

What size do you want it? I'll send it to you.

I took the photo at Cottage reef (Queenscliff VIC) in 8m. Its a shore dive just off the Cottage by the Sea holiday camp.

Particularly in Australia and the U.S.

And it appears more then half the voting population in Australia are also closely related. :(

My answer:

That's DragThing (www.dragthing.com), very useful shareware app. Highly recommended.

The application being minimised (Genie Effect) is Windows 2000 running under Virtual PC. It is obviously that Netscape Browser Prototype (http://moz.sillydog.org/archives/000465.html) is running in Windows 2000. Background is Ben Affleck.

Note: the Genie Effect is nothing special to Mac users, but currently, the Netscape Browser Prototype is only available to Windows users. And that's basically a Windows application minimised with Mac effect :-)
