View Full Version : What do you carry your Laptop around in?

DrNick

ok well my frirst thread. some of you may know me as Recto on OCAU
sorry if this thread is a repeat.

Im starting uni next year so i'll be needing a bag to carry my laptop and books around in
something stylish like the ibooks themselves :)

i have a 12" ibook
can anyone reccommend one to me?
and a place to get it etc

My friend has one of these. I love it. I would get one. Can only get from the USA unfortunately. Exchange rate now is not too bad though.

A "Boot" case comes with the Zoom, but you need to select the XS size.

My 2nd choice would be something made by STM, but I haven't really had a look at the range.

I'm partial to backpacks, and "bags made especially for laptops, but don't look like they are made for laptops".

we carry the same rules as overclockers. next time before posting something, try using the search (http://forums.appletalk.com.au/index.php?act=Search&f=) button.

see this old thread (http://forums.appletalk.com.au/index.php?showtopic=1068&hl=laptop+bags) for more info on the same topic

Get either STM or Crumpler since they're both aussie companies. That's my patriotism for the day.

I currently own a STM Sport backpack, VERY tough. I've had mine for about a year now and the stitching has yet to come undone :D It's a little dirty but there is not a single scratch on it.

One thing to consider is that at Uni you dont really want to advertise "THIS IS MY EXPENSIVE LAPTOP BAG" to the world. Leave it sitting anywhere and it will walk away on someone else's back.

I have the same iBook and I just chuck mine in my normal bag along with my other books when I go to Uni. If its a long day dont forget the power adapter, WiFi can chew battery.

For an in case sleeve you can't beat the ZeroShock one. It's kind of like the STM sleeve, but it has a high-resistance polyurethane foam that provides superior absorption of external impact force. http://shinza.com/product_info.php?cPath=1_5&products_id=45

I even have one of these for my iPod and digital camera. They don't take up any valuable space in your bag either.

Wow that looks awesome!

I put my ibook in a stm glove and shove it in my bad. Like ForwardSlash, I like to travel inconspiciously. :)

Like ForwardSlash and scruffle, when I carry my laptop to uni, it has to be inconspicuous. I use an STM glove, which fits very nice and tight over my powerbook.

It then just goes straight into my backpack along with all my other gear. For 6 months now, I don't even have a scratch yet :P

I've had quite a poor experience with STM bags, I bought one earlier this year to take my iBook to uni (when I didn't want to pose with my Boblbee) and within one semester both its main zips had broken and apart from that I found the design rather poor. Crumpler is the way to go.

I have a Crumpler Wee Bee for my 12" Powerbook. It is a small, compact bag, well made, well padded and has lots of nooks and crannies. I think they are about $150, you'll probably find them cheaper.

I love my bag.

I put mine in one of these uber Apple laptop bags. They are just the right size for a 12" iBook or Powerbook, have heaps of padding, enough room to fit an iPod, power supply, mouse and a few cables and cost a whopping $33 from Applecentre Norwood.

sorry about the bad pic.

I use a Targus Backpack, got it cause it was cheap...and it came with a perfectly sized (at the time) 16MB USB thumb drive.

I still use it after 12 months.

Its got heaps of pockets, for everything. The charger, video out cable, the 14" iBook ofcourse, Digital Camera, cables (ethernet w/crossover adaptor - camera cable - usb extension - mobile phone charger USB cable). Mobile, bottle of water, etc.

And its very well padded, and so are the shoulder straps...so comfy when its on your back...provided that both straps are in use...very uncomfortable with it over one shoulder.

If you want a bag to store your Uni books as well as looking inconspicous you might also like to check out the STM backpacks. Very functional and good size. You can also add the Glove sleeve for even more protection for your iBook.

I have an original STM alley (before the velcro fasteners) - with a removable laptop sleeve :D - and the XS drift bag. As mentioned earlier - Aussie company... good karma when you support them. ;)

Whereas it took me less than a week to develop scratches and scuffs on the outside of my iBook. I'm not particularly worried about it though.

I'm sure it adds character... :P

I've got a BOOQ for my 17" and while it works well it could do with a bit more padding at the bottom, I don't remember dropping it but I have a small dent on the corner, I thought about getting it fixed but a new outer CASE was MEGA$$$$$$$$$$$, so I didn't bother.

Im the proud owner of STM products :)

My first... http://www.standardtm.com.au/special_cases_glove.cfm
this one is GREAT, just easy because you can put it in whatever bag you want, and it doesnt get damaged, even protects it from water a little bit.

My second... http://www.standardtm.com.au/shoulder_bags_babybrink.cfm
i like this one because its very small, but it bulges a bit when you take your charger, vga cable and a network cable etc. i tend not to use this one very much... thats why i bought the next one...

My third... http://www.standardtm.com.au/shoulder_bags_sdrift.cfm
i absolutely love this one. it can hold quite a lot, i use this as my main bag now. pleanty of pockets and compartments, and some weird strap that you put around your waist when you have it on, no idea what that is for lol.

So thats all my powerbook bags :D

Ok guys.

To all those who want an uber retro black padded laptop bag with a coloured Apple logo on it. Applecentre Norwood and Macmedia in Adelaide have them.

They will only fit 12" Powerbooks and 12" iBooks.

I spoke to Graham in Applecentre Norwood. He can see no problems with posting them.

It looks like these two stores are the only ones with them. They apparently bought several boxes of them and expect to have them in stock till sometime next year.

Ring Applecentre Norwood on (08) 8333 0922 to get one.

Hi DrNick,

I have a 12" ibook as well, and bought the red/blue crumpler bag called "McBain's baby". Fits the 12" really nicely. Very cool.

I use a targus backpack. It is litterally huge, and does not look at all like a laptop bag, more of a skate/street style.

I bought it mainly due to the size, it can hold all my books, folders and laptop for a week at school. In fact, I packed it full of clothes, food and everything to live (minus beer) and lived out of it for 10 days at schoolies. Either I'm an ultra efficent packer or this is one big bag :)

Actually Ozi, it's the Wack-O-Phone.

Nick, that style of bag comes in three sizes - roll-o-notes, which can house a 14 inch laptop and not much else, wack-o-phone (which is that model, the one I'm getting) which houses up to 15inch laptops and room for other junk, and the Very-Busy-Man which houses 17inch laptops.

You can download the .pdf catalogue from the crumpler website Ozi linked to.

They actually have a web site at http://www.ozonlineshop.com.au

No idea how they are to deal with - only just found them.

One of my housemates has a crumpler bag for his 17" PowerBook and loves it. Looks great too.

if any of you are interested in some other more 'individual' bags, here are some i found whilst searching for mine (which ended up being an stm medium curve!)

http://everquestdesign.com/list.cfm?Event_ID=54

http://www.timbuk2.com/

http://www.tombihn.com/

http://oakley.com.au/catalog/gear/gearbags/

and there are some threads on macnn and macrumors that have lists of even more laptop bags...!

also first time around on here there was mention of all the kings men (?) which looked pretty decent

btw i like the look of that maccase stealth sleeve :)
