Hey. I'm interested to see what everyones workspace looks like.

I've attached the adelaide office of AppleTalkAU
(though it is often in the loungeroom on the couch instead)

So get posting! Show us your desktop. (not screenshot)

May 2006: Due to the forum software upgrade removing all the attachments, many of the images are missing.

<Picture Coming Soon> (as soon as I can upload it somewhere)

I stand up at my mac at my nice IKEA desk in the living room, or I'll sit at a stupid desk in the bedroom or I'll more often sit on the bed with my TiGHzBook15. (I'm still working on a good naming system for all modern pBooks ;).

I even have a nice external hard drive, i call it "Intrikit Weaver" and after having reformatted my hdd in the tiBook (after an 85 day uptime aftaightafter an upgrade of panther over jaguar)

(Actually, IntrikitWeaver is my blue/white G3, it's supposed to be a server though :P)

(EDIT: Picture here now, it's pretty huge and it's not my normal desk with my main computer.)

Here is a shot of my new Mac :) Excuse the average pics (next one in second post - can't seem to post more than 1 pic).

Just another PC running Basilisk? Yep, but look at the size - the smallest 68K System 8.1 compatible Macintosh around, a Toshiba Libretto 60CT :D

The Windows network driver that comes with Basilisk is great, allowing me to network it to any Mac under the Chooser.

Is it sluggish?

It's a P133 machine (overclocked from 100Mhz default, but has a P120 CPU installed), 24MB RAM/30GB HD (that one was installed by me :)). RAM only expandable to 32MB.

When running Basilisk, it hovers around the speed of a Quadra 700 - more than enough for games etc. at that speed.

Here's some shots of my workspace,

The box to the right of the desk holds the iMac and G3'd 7600, it also contains my USB and KVM switch to use both PC's with the keyboard and mouse on the desk. The macs are also linked together by twisted pair cable to onboard ethernet.

Next thing is a decent Flat Panel monitor(when dollars allow)

Regards Mark

ps: made "the box" myself hard to find something that would hold both pc's

will add another post as can only attach one pic

I remember a few years back wanting to buy myself a Libretto, the things were just so small! and they had NT4 on them ;)

I remember telling myself that when I eventually got one, because when you're in 4th grade you think you can save up for stuff and then you see the latest magazine or a pack of bubble gum and there goes your money. And I thought that when I got one I'd be able to take it to school and use it on the bus and it'd be just ever-so-cool and whatnot.. ;)

I still wouldn't mind having one :P

if apple made or had ever made a notebook that small I'm sure that the sales of it would be through the roof :)

(or it would be another cube/TAM/MacTV, you know the kind, fantastic technology perfectly executed but in the wrong timeframe, or sommat like that)

I also like that 'box' thing ;)

It's not something I would ever do, most likely, but it keeps a stack of desktops looking clean and trim, and manageable. :)

I only recently picked mine up too Cory - always wanted one as well. However, over the past few weeks I've had it, it's developed a funny freeze when you press around the left hand side of the keyboard. Sometimes the machine stays up for hours, or crashes immediately on startup.

I've discovered it's due to a design flaw of the motherboard's memory being stacked 2 chips high, causing delamination of the RAM chips over time. Sob :(, but at least it's fixable with a fine soldering iron.

Apple did the same thing? eMate, my friend, eMate! Unfortunately the Newton range was too far undervalued by then for the eMate to be a hit.

This is my office, or one corner of my bedroom. I wanted to make my pc more mac like so I bought an apple studio display. Don't worry, a powermac is on the drawing boards. I must say the pc runs a ps2 well! Bout all it's good for. As I don't have a tv in my room I run the console through a tv capture card, not as clear but good enough. As for the powerbook, it's portable, so I use it anywhere and everywhere.

Cheers

Cool, running iTuens on the PC certainly does give it that "maclike" look ;)

I found (well, I just took) a picture of my TiBook on a desk where I sit down, it's actually my brother's desk but the table behind it where the audiovision appears is where his computer (a PC) usually goes now.

I'm too cheap to buy a real laptop stand, so the shoebox you see in there is one that I made to hold up my mom's LCD monitor back in the "portrait display craze" of January 2004 ;)

When I first started collecting I read of a fellow on the lowendmac lists who'd just reached over 100 macs in his collection.

He said he started collecting when he gave up smoking, and found it was more fun and cheaper as well. I had a little cackle at that.

Now I realise I started getting really into accumulating the boxies when *I* gave up smoking, 2 and a half years ago :). I think there's something in that!

The only broken ones I have are the 9150 (which I dropped moments after getting home, and the motherboard jumped out of its holders. flexed so much it lost a piece out of the corner :( ), and a Mac II and Mac IIx which are both so dead and corroded inside I doubt they worked properly for much of the 1990s even. My Plus is marginal - the screen blooms out wide just after poweron and kinda zooms into the middle quarter of the screen, so it's not really usable.

Otherwise, barring lack of RAM in some of the LCs, they're all working or could be with a few minutes effort :)

The 20" Cinema Display is bought from Currawong.
The box behind the Display is the Yamaha TSS-10 Home Theatre Sound System (5.1)
And the small box box behind the TSS-10 control box is M-Audio Sonica (for USB to optical sound, since the G4 does not have optical output)

Two coffees, one is for my Grumpy, of course.

My Grumpy is 35 inches tall.

Heres my everyday setup, without my iCurve or Logitech MX duo.

That little thing attached is a Kensington Sonic Lock Motion Detecting Alarm. Basically if im sleeping and somebody tries to move my PB it wakes up the neighbors (and me!) and gets all the dogs in the neighborhood barking with its high pitch squeels.

I also have a small audio setup happening up here but i wont get that set back up until exams are over.... i dont need anymore distractions.

Dunno about cmetom, but I find two mice is by far the best way to work! I use the niiiiiice apple one for photoshopping, other precision-needing tasks and just general pointing. The Microsoft mouse (hate the software, don't mind the hardware) is the clicking one! I NEED all 5 buttons on that thing, I got sick of holding key combos while clicking.

So here's my rather modest set up with two mice. The disturbing thing about that pic is it was taken about a month ago and right now my Activity Monitor memory graph looks EXACTLY the same.

I know it's a boring set up but it beats the crap out of any PC and OS X just eats Linux...

I have a Microsoft Laptop Mouse (I actually got it for free from Microsoft - not everyone can say that Microsoft actually gave them something) otherwise I am Logitech all the way. I have the Cordless Optical Desktop Set. Great mouse and keyboard, even worked with YDL on the G3.

I love the MX-1000 and would dearly love the MX-900 for the PB. Perhaps I could build one out of MDF. Speaking of which, I need some ideas for Desk MkII. What are some dream features of a desk?

As promised...

Don't think I will be doing the debian install tonight. I am too tired. I do love the bluetooth gear. So nice. The icurve is funky as well. Having this LCD to the right as a 2nd display is a bit odd too. I will get use to it.

well until very recently, you HAD to have a G5 if you owned a 30". No other computer could run it... it needed a special Nvidia Graphics Card.

Samsung SyncMaster 172X, otherwise known as the greatest 17" LCD known to mankind.

It has dual VGA/DVI inputs, and can act as a poor man's KVM (without the actual keyboard/mouse switching going on) just by hitting the 'Exit' button, underneath.

Also, the monitor controls are hidden away, yet still very much accessible.

The PC tower is a Lian Li V1000, which kinda rips off the G5 design a bit, but I bought it more for the fact that my 6 hard drives and GeForce 6800 GT needed a lot more ventilation than my old case could provide (I wasn't kidding about the file/media server bit).

pipsqeek
14th March 2005, 07:29 PM
Yeah. The 172X is great. But unlike you. I've figured out there are no much better quality and value for money LCD's on the market. And they also are the poor mans KVM... well, just the V.

None the less. Still, one of the greatest monitors from the last 12 months.

That's precisely what I use them for - my real switch (generic 10/100 8 port) is in a little compartment just below the tower (http://www.ng-gamers.com/jaymz/macminigoons.jpg) (you can see the little lights in that image).

My Cabletron MRXI-2 10MBit hub wasn't high enough for me to see my LCD in bed, without the center speaker getting in the way. :D

In a spur-of-the-moment decision, I decided to completely re-arrange my apartment. Considering my wife was away at the time, this might have had interesting results. Let me say nothing of splurging on a second monitor, cept that it I may as well toss the 51cm TV now...

Does this look familiar to anyone??

Yes, I have the exact same bin, only mine has a Coke bottle, not sprite. :P
Bought from Freedom or Ikea? I can't remember where I got mine. Mum's got the black model.

I noticed the resemblance to the Dock's trash icon, too!
