A friend of mine has an imac ( spec below)

Won’t let him repair permissions in disk utility.

Suddenly running extremely slow won’t even let desktop background image show.

E.G. Excel in OS9 won’t let him import images.
The picture could not be inserted because there is Not enough memory available.

Have now dumped prefs for finder and system in OS9
And have zapped PRAM.

Still has the problem.

Any suggestions much appreciated.

Perhaps one of the memory modules has gone belly up. Try taking out one of the memory modules at a time (assuming you have a 64mb and a 128mb one installed). See if the machine boots with just one or the other module installed.

Just a question...how much disk space does your friend have free?

Might wanna boot from the OS CD and scan the HD for errors - it might be on the way out. If so, it can really make the machine crawl until the drive finally starts reporting the problems it's having to the OS.
