Ok. I know this may be something really simple but I've looked on mac help and searched the forums and I still can't manage how to work out how to change an icon. mac help isn't very helpful. Can someone explain how it's done?

Cheers.

6 simple steps.

1. Choose the file with the icon you want to put onto another file, and choose "Get Info" from the Finder's file menu.

2. Click on its little icon in the top left of the get info window and it will have a blue border to show it is selected.

3. Press command-c to copy the icon.

4. Choose the file you want to stick the new icon on in finder.

5. Choose get info like before on this new file and click on its icon.

6. Paste the new icon over the top (command-v).

Oh how easy is that. You know what I was doing? I was trying to click on the big icon that comes up when the get info window appears. Thanks mate. :D

Haha... and what happens if you change an icon, but don't know where the orig file is kept?

Um, like if I did it to my HD icon? Haha- what an idiot :(

(anyone know where the HD icon is?!)

Cheers, Dave lol

Try using CandyBar it's a great little app for changing all your icons in one go. Very fast and easy.

Ok now I know how to change the icons. How do I change the finder icon in the doc without an app like candybar? I have another finder icon I want to replace it with that is more vibrant in colour.

Cheers.

I remember exploring this before and i found it was a hugely tricky procedure to change system icons like finder etc. I ended up buying candybar and honestly never looked back. It's simple and guaranteed not to screw up your system.

Ok so it looks as though I may have to purchase candybar. Thanks.

I believe the PNG you want to replace is finder.png found in /System/Library/CoreServices/Dock/Contents/Resources.

I'm surprised it's not an ICNS file, but then neither is the URL one, also in that folder.
