View Full Version : connecting an HP 5l printer to a G3 iMac 500Mhz

Hi everyone,

My mum has an old LaserJet 5L printer from HP and wants to use it with the iMac she now has. Only thing is, the 5L does not have USB ports - just serial.

Is it possible to buy some sort of "frankenstein" cable with usb on one end and serial on the other - and then hook it up to the Mac?

Will it work on OS X? Obviously I'd love it if she could still use her old printer with the iMac somehow, so all advice is appreciated.

TIA :)

there are cheaper single port ones around but you will have to search for one

Any local PC shop will sell parallel --> USB adaptor for $20, otherwise I know Officeworks has Belkim boxed cables for ~ $50 IIRC.

Thanks guys (I presume you're both fellas). I thought such a cable was some sort of joke. I'll go looking for one this weekend. Ta! :)

oops - I didn't look at that eBay example - I thought you were talking about a serial to usb cable. No probs, though - I can see now that I need to buy an adapter.

By the time you've worked out USB to Serial, you've spent half or more of the cost of a new, basic laser printer. I'd be considering how heavily the printer is used and whether or not it's worth replacing it, rather than trying to adapt it to new hardware.
