Have just got hold of a new MacBook Pro and set it up. Whenever I turn it on or wake it from sleep, it makes an annoying little electronic tune. I can't find anywhere to turn it off. It's completely pointless and will end up driving me mad! Anyone any idea how to turn it off? Clifft

the only sound my MBP makes when i wake it from sleep is the optical drive buzzing.

oh, and sometimes it says 'good morning, sir' ;)

don't tell me you're complaining about the mac startup noise! though this noise should NOT be heard when you wake from sleep, only when you turn on your mac.

when I say startup chime, i mean this(or something very similar):
http://www.whitwell.ndo.co.uk/musicthing/s.../macstartup.mp3 (http://www.whitwell.ndo.co.uk/musicthing/sounds/macstartup.mp3)

if you must turn this off because it bothers you (are you a windows user? I am still surprised that it can annoy you that much. Does the windows welcome music bother you? That annoys ths shit out of me much more than the apple startup sound), there are 2 ways of doing this:
1. When you turn off your computer, mute the volume. Obviously ytou will need to turn the volume on again every time after the computer has finished starting up to hear other sounds. Naturally this method is laborious.;

2. You can try this:

http://digg.com/apple/Don_t_like_the_Mac_s...artupSound.pref (http://digg.com/apple/Don_t_like_the_Mac_startup_chime_Turn_it_off_with_ StartupSound.pref)

Since you don't really tell us exactly what you are hearing, I can only assume this is the noise you mean.

You misunderstand me. It isn't the start-up chime which doesn't bother me at all. I rarely turn my computers off so don't hear it that often. This is a noise that goes a little like; Doodle Doodle Donk Donk, as best as I describe it. It is repeated three times. I haven't been a Windows user at home since 1998, only at work (which is probably why I'm so grumpy) Clifft

I think what you're hearing is the optical drive initialising....

edit: Noticed that it's occuring 3 times, so it must b something else. Installed any software lately?

Try putting it off sleep with a CD in the drive - if it's the optical drive, you'll hear the sound of the drive whirring up. Other than that, I think the slot drives do that so if you have a disk ready to be put in, it'll suck it in when you take your computer off standby.

clifft,

It is possible that it's the sound of your Hard Drive squealing. Sometimes, a problem Hard Drive can make a sound that really does sound like a piece of electronic tune. As we can't hear it, it might be worthwhile taking it back to the store you purchased it from and showing them the sound it makes on wake from Sleep.

Might be a faulty drive...

Yeah, take it to the store. Macs do beep when there are hardware problems, though, correct?

Any chance its one of these?
