Is this a recent thing?

I haven't used it for the past 6 months or so (ichat and AIM) but before that I never really had any dramas with it.

Ive never had a any dramas with it using the official app over many, many years. Except when using Adium (which Ive only tried out over the last couple of weeks) which seems to have a tendency to disconnect every now and then.

Adium, when using MSN, uses the exact same network as the regular MSN client :P

No shit, but when it goes down you can still be on Yahoo / ICQ / AOL / .Mac etc
[/b]

That hardly helps when other people you need to talk to are on MSN only. Adium is good, but it isn't an alternative to the MSN network, just an alternative to other clients.

Hawker,
I don't think you have a clue what your going on about..... your shouting your mouth off without giving us any proof on what your saying. So exactly how is the MSN network crap?

Because it seems to be just crap for you and not everyone else...... maybe it's something on your end?

And now your going on about Adium.... so is it the network or the client (msn messenger) that's crap for you?

Or will this turn into another ABC thread, and you won't be able to give any examples on why its crap because of contracts and stuff? :P

Oh wait NO FCK THAT :)

I am yet to hear that MSN is good? islayer said its the biggest network, I dispute that, I think ICQ is bigger, AOL not far behind MSN etc. and they don't have as much down time as the MSN network seems to :)
[/b]

Are you selectively illiterate today?

After you stated it's the most unstable network, iSlayer, Bartron, MacSyd and my posts aboveall said words to the effect "I've had no problem with the MSN network".

Anyone with a year 10 education can imply those comments to mean that they find it stable and good.

woah....we're heading offtrack now...settle down.

Getting back ontopic I can't see how this yahoo thing is supposed to work. I signed in (using my yahoo account) and added in my MSN account as a contact...my PC running MSN is right next to my mac....nothing...nada. As far as yahoo is concerned I'm offline. Are we supposed to be using special MS Live accounts or something?

Anyone else have any success?

nope i don't get it either bartron. i had exactly the same problem so closed it and went back to adium :-P it does look pretty though.

and i also agree with bartron, settle down folks. :-D

Wouldn't it be great if we just had one IM protocol everyone (MS, Apple, Yahoo, AOL, skype.. google soonish?) would use. That way I could use my favorite IM client (iChat) to do audio and video chat! AND we would not have any of these uhmmm.. heated? discussions. LOL. Everybody just happy together :P

I just hope skype will come with video support for their mac client soon. I like skype and it is also very well integrated to Mac OS X. Would be great if iChat joined up with Skype!
BTW I am also using the yahoo beta at the moment. It is ok, but still has a few bugs. It is good to see though that the development of apple apps by yahoo and alike is no longer put off.

Interesting... Download it, give it a try and post your findings. I'm sure there'll be a lot of people interested to see how it goes.

As for the app itself, it certainly looks the goods. All sparkly and leopardlike (at least that's what i hope leopard looks like ;) )

It's tweaking my interest for the first time now. Let's see how it compares to skype.
The full Yahoo Messenger release will have video.

You mean the full yahoo release will have audio support, right? Since video is already working fine. Been using it for quite a while now.

An unofficial Skype video beta has been floating around for the past couple of weeks. Its not recommended to use, but it does show that video Skype is not far off. Those with built-in iSights seem to have no problem, but those with external cameras have constant crashes.

BTW, does anyone use ICQ anymore? This topic came up on this week's TWiT. I have only one friend who uses it, otherwise its MSN or iChat.

Yeah, it's been a while since i gave it a spin i must admit. Skype got me a couple of years ago now.

Funny though, i can't see where or how the Beta gives you voice?! Yet the current version (http://messenger.yahoo.com/download.php;_ylt=AhSqOpOn1nhJrQ_H.pfA7IjTnMMF) appears to.

So like a few other people here I ran back to the loving arms of Adium. :)

Funny that we could now theoretically use yahoo/msn for video, and skype for audio at the same time! And both companies are promising to add audio (for Yahoo) or video (for Skype).

Or we use iChat, and have audio and video already. But no (well, few) PC people to chat to. Not many people I know want to install AIM + video, or Trillian Pro on their PCs. Doh!

Looking forward to upgraded Yahoo and Skype clients.

Added:
And to add to the irony: Apple's machines now have a couple of good ways to run Windows XP. But even then audio+video chat is thwarted, because the internal iSight is unusable under both Bootcamp and Parallels! It's like the IM gods are listening, but haven't been appeased just yet.

Now, really looking forwarded to upgraded Yahoo and Skype clients...

What next? iChat for Windows? That would just be too many solutions at once. Haha.

I know it is annoying . I still like iChat best. How is Trillian Pro working for pc users? I remember when chatting from iChat to AIM (pc) the picture sometimes froze. BTW iChat among mac users works like a charm, I often use the multi chat feature and talk to several relatives at the same time.

BTW. the skype beta with video is easy to google. I might give it a shot tonight and tell how it works. I know...bad....

trillian pro was a beefy program, i used to use before the switch.

if msn dies? good! i'll use googletalk instead

This new yahoo beta is great. The old one was frigging awful, and i almost felt guilty installing it on a friend's computer for them.

I have one friend that I could use iChat with and see how the video thing works. Crashes every single time. So, my new macbook pro with its lovely camera is yet to get a run. Except for those first few hours of taking stupid shots with photobooth. :P

we are both running same version mac. He on a powerbook, me on a 15" macbook pro.

Nothing. So we wait for skype.....
so close damnit.

Has anyone been able to sign in with an MSN account? I can't. I don't know if I can be bothered making an Y! account just to have a look.

The Yahoo page states that the contacts have to be using Live Messenger in order for it to work correctly.

Never cared for Yahoo personally and if I want to use my iSight I use Mercury over the MSN network anyway.

I don't mind the Mac client for MSN IM, and I don't use Yahoo.

Good to see they have finally started to merge the networks though. It had to some sometime soon, there were just too many networks and clients to go around.

Hey guys, just wondering for those who say they're using Mercury to video chat with friends on PC MSN, do you mean you're just looking at video? When I tried, there's only a webcam feature (with no sound) so all we could do is watch each other but not hear.. what's the catch here? Thanks!

no logging in with msn details it would seem. only msn contacts if you are a yahoo user. that sucks as all my friends are on msn.
