View Full Version : Portable wireless broadband for MBP

21st June 2006, 05:39 PM
So i've had my MBP since Jan.

Doing a lot of travel and sick of paying $20 per day for hotel internet. AFAIK none of the wireless providers (iburst, telstra, vodafone, three) have one of those small cards things that the Macbook pros take?

Am i wrong?

Is there an alternative small solution available? I do not want a large usb modem that requires seperate power.

Thanks guys!

There was some discussion about this recently, the new slot in the macbook pro is pretty new, and it's hard to find anything that really uses it yet.

Someone did say someone had brought out a USB adapter etc. I'd also ask broadband suppliers if they have USB versions.

I did a search for the other thread, but I cannot find it, will continue to look...

take a look at the Telstra minimax option, might be your best bet at the moment...

thanks The Architect.mac - I missed it in the notebook forums, scrolled straight over the top of it - thought it would be down a bit :P

You see the current dilemma though wise. I'd look into third party options, and just wait for the new technology to become fully realised.

You might want to check this out first:

reviews the telstra solution. Not cheap by the looks of it. They mainly review the big "home" version but the principle is the same - uses the EVDO network.

or you might consider using the 3 network and a bluetooth or USB connection to your phone. If you pick a business plan this might be more cost effective.

I posted heaps on links on wireless (NOT iBurst or Unwired) to this thread here:

why don't you get the Unwired or iBurst option (not the laptop card one)? yes, it may be a bit clunky to carry around, but will give you internet access where available
