View Full Version : Can this be Done with OS X Server 10.4 or 10.4

9th June 2006, 12:43 PM
I would like to know if i can made seprate hd partitions or user accounts and then when i get broadband in a few weeks have it set up so that people can access it from home and use the hd partition for their own use.
The server is located and my house and is where the files would be stored.
If you haven't got my idea so far i'm after an idisk sort of thing where i make a quota for a user and they log on with their password and username and use the allocated space for whatever they want.
I would like to know how i could do this?

I would need the ability to add and delete users at will.

Thankyou in advance.

OSX or OSX Server will do it easy

OSX isnt as configurable such as quotes etc but OSX server will do it easy

Firstly you need some sort of Directory service running (Open directory in OS X Server, Active Directory in Windows, etc.) for authentication and such. Then you need to setup server stored homes in OS X Server.

Relatively easy to do with OS X Server. Considerably harder with OS X and the necessary OSS components.

+ you will need to know how to setup DNS and various other services that a Directory service relies on.

Edit: Uh, I think I misunderstood your original post. Do you want users to log into their machine via your server and have their home directory be stored on the server? Or do you just want people to have the option of having their home on your server pop up as a separate volume on their machine?

All the settings are in Workgroup Manager. There you can customise what users can or cannot do.

If you have the Server software you should have the documentation. Read it.
We will assist and advise, but we won't hold you hand for you.

Read the documentation, how do you think we learnt? the apple docs are one of the best around

Otherwise check out macosxhints forums, they have a server section

thats if you PAID for the server software, and HAVE the documentation...

Have a look at / around

They had a sort of do it yourself .mac article or 2 a while back

was interesting reading but may be a little old and probably aimed at a mac os X as opposed to the server

the interesting thing is that the unix guts of both are the same

Anyway Hope this helps
