Here are my fish...which did not have to be put down.

They are African Cichlids (pronounced: Sik-lids)

They have teeth, they have drawn blood when I have hand fed them. They are vegitarians.

But give them meat and they turn into bloodlusting demons from hell. Killing each other, smashing into the glass...this includes the heater and other apperatis. Shows what effect meat really has.

Are they traditionally found in Lake Victoria, Pip? If so, they are an amazing study in speciation and the occupation of nichés leading to genetic diversity and speciation from a single ancestor. :)

Ozi you would not, by chance, be studying an ecology unit at Uni would you? Sounds strangely familiar to me :)

Anyhow, don't know the details about Lake Victoria (Africa: somwhere near Tanzania and Kenya purchance?)) but they have been found in the pondage for Hazlewood power station in Gippsland (Victoria, Australia for those who don't know) They love the warmth from the cooling towers outfall. Sort of like introducing foxes to Tasmania; upset a few biology/ecology types when first discovered (don't know if they managed to destroy the Cichlid population successfully though or even if it was eventually attempted)

Funnily enough, the small colourful one is called Victoria, who originates from Lake Victoria.

Nimbochromis venustus as its called scientifically, orginates from Lake Malawai. Malawai has the easiest fish to keep and they are generally less harmfull. Its usually the ones from other lakes, Tangynaki for example that have more agressive traits. These are best kept with their own kind only.

Cichlids are also best kept in well stocked tanks. And changing the layout of the tank every 6 months can be fun, because they get less agressive trying to find themselves a new home. Also, changing the tank layout can induce breeding. Don't ask me how, it just does.

Here is another fish I have. A Zebrachi who also originates from Malawai. He is from the Mbuna genuis.

maHAH! I knew it. Going to that Biology of Cells and Organisms course was well worth it after all. :) Yes kim its only first year, but I hope to do some ecology next year. Thanks for the info, pip.

I bet telling stories like that pulls the ladies... ;)

And yeah, my cat is indoor only: shes a little cat, and we don't want her killing native wildlife (even though I reckon even ringtailed possums could beat her up! :))

So far I reckon the winning entries are the Tawny Frogmouth and "Sniper" the snake. Does anyone else have some pets that want international fame on this forum?
