Hi everyone,

How do you extract a archive like the above? The format goes something like this:

filename.zip.001
filename.zip.002
filename.zip.003
etc

Coming from using RAR and ZIPin Windows, it normally is in the format

filename.zip
filename.001
etc

Is this something that can be done in Mac only or can I extract it in Windows?

Thanks

Split&Concat - In Internet newsgroups large files often are split into smaller parts since messages can not be of more than a certain size to be able to post them in newsgroups.

How to split and concatenate files in UNIX:

Here's an example of a file being split into 1100 mb parts using the command "split" :

[c-67-180-140-12:~/Desktop/concat] dave% ls
. .. ut2k4.toast
[c-67-180-140-12:~/Desktop/concat] dave% split -b 1100m ut2k4.toast

When done:

[c-67-180-140-12:~/Desktop/concat] dave% ls -lh
total 8.8G
drwxr-xr-x 8 dave admin 272 Apr 7 17:07 .
drwxrwxr-x 12 dave admin 408 Apr 7 17:01 ..
-rw-r--r-- 1 dave admin 4.4G Nov 15 16:25 ut2k4.toast
-rw-r--r-- 1 dave admin 1.1G Apr 7 17:04 xaa
-rw-r--r-- 1 dave admin 1.1G Apr 7 17:05 xab
-rw-r--r-- 1 dave admin 1.1G Apr 7 17:06 xac
-rw-r--r-- 1 dave admin 1.1G Apr 7 17:07 xad
-rw-r--r-- 1 dave admin 82M Apr 7 17:07 xae

Now, to put 'em back together again:

First, I'll trash ut2k4.toast and then:

cat xa* > whatever.toast

When done:

[c-67-180-140-12:~/Desktop/concat] dave% ls -lh
total 8.8G
drwxr-xr-x 9 dave admin 306 Apr 7 17:12 .
drwxrwxr-x 12 dave admin 408 Apr 7 17:01 ..
-rw-r--r-- 1 dave admin 6.0k Apr 7 17:11 .DS_Store
-rw-r--r-- 1 dave admin 4.4G Apr 7 17:16 whatever.toast
-rw-r--r-- 1 dave admin 1.1G Apr 7 17:04 xaa
-rw-r--r-- 1 dave admin 1.1G Apr 7 17:05 xab
-rw-r--r-- 1 dave admin 1.1G Apr 7 17:06 xac
-rw-r--r-- 1 dave admin 1.1G Apr 7 17:07 xad
-rw-r--r-- 1 dave admin 82M Apr 7 17:07 xae

Now, the big question: will whatever.toast mount ? :)
