I have searched around and can't find the answer - so please forgive me if it posted somewhere else.

I am trying to burn a cd - audio and video files - I created a "New Burn Folder" but when I drag things to it it just leaves a shortcut - not the actual file - what am I doing wrong??

Nothing wrong. Now burn the cd.

(you can can copy files in if you like - hold option key + drag and drop )

Don't apologise or feel like an idiot, asking questions is one of the best ways to learn! I too would have been confused, having never used the Finder to burn. What would have made you an idiot is not asking the question, and going without burning simply because you did not want to ask.

Don't stress over it, I had that problem when I moved over to mac as well.

Me back again for a quick question - I have put a blank DVD in my Mac - but when I click burn in the burn folder it keeps telling to insert a disc and when I do it opens up that disk utility thing - how can I get it to recognise that I HAVE put a disk in and stop that disk utility thing interfering?

Check to make sure that you have not accidentally set Disk Utility to open up when you insert a blank DVD. Go to System Preferences and then CD's & DVD's.
