I have a new Intel iMac which seems to take AGES to re-encode a VOB file to MPG-4. It has 2gb ram,2.0ghz and 256 Vram. I dont have any other programs running either. for a 5 min clip it took 40mins! 5 mins on my AMD PC. what gives?

What program are you using to re-encode? Is it universal?

No but if they release 8 I hope they add widescreen/16:9 to their DVD menus.

The reason it is taking so long is because the CPU has to emulate PPC, then run toast, then encode the video.

When toast is universal, it should work. Until then - maybe find a plugin for quicktime that converts to the format you want? I'm not really up with which other programs there are to do this either.

Could you use the mpeg2 quicktime plugin?, does that read VOB's?

and looking through macupdate, the only universal video encoder that flags 'vob' as a search term is iSquint (http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/19769). The rest are PPC [search results (http://macupdate.com/vob)]
