For the first time, as I got hold of a cable for next to nothing I connected my Dell and Powerbook together using the firewire cable.

Windows detects new hardware but is unable to identify the type or download a driver.

What driver do I need to look for to establish the connection?

Why not use a cat 5 crossover cable

There used to be an IP over Firewire driver for Windows but I can no longer find it on Apple's developer site.
Better of taking Pismo's advice.

Is the Firewire device installed properly?

Also try manually allocating IP addresses to both machines.

Ahh, now I think I know what your getting at. Are you trying to map the PowerBook to you Dell laptop?
The only way I can think to do this (without finding the IP/FireWire driver) would be to start the PowerBook in Target Disk mode (hold down the T key when booting) then plug the machines together. You will, however, need Software call MacDrive on you Dell to mount and read/write to the PowerBooks drive.

All your comments were useful in helping me search for the right thing in google. Here is what I ultimately wanted to do.
